there's a '84 240 DL tranny w/OD on ebay right now that i'd like to put in my 66 122. if i use my bellhousing will a slant tranny fit into a straightup vehicle? and what will i need to do about shifters and or tunnel?

No! For what it would cost to adapt you could get a couple good M41s!

The bellhousings are quite different. The 240 M46 bellhousing incorporates the front bearing retainer and seal while the original M40 has a separate piece for those functions--the shape/size is different too. Other posters have shown modified M46 bellhousings, cut and rewelded for upright use. First gear in the M46 would not be very favorable with the already low rear axle ratio in the 120. The M40/41 has a nice useful long first gear. You're probably better off finding an M41.

Or you could throw all caution to the wind and put in a T5 tranny like me!
