Removal of fuel pump relay 700 1987

How the heck do you get at the relay? It's located below the radio and lighter panel behind the fuses in the center. It's a 740GL wagon. I can not get the radio or lighter panel out to get to them---HELP

    Remove the ash tray.

There's a secret panel around the ciggy lighter itself. Look closely. Carefully pop that off. That should reveal the screws you need to remove. Should be two... but it's been a long long time since I've been in there.

Ryan is right- there are two screws hidden behind the small panel in the lighter panel. One is on an angle- and be careful removing this as the metal screw clip falls out when you take it off sometimes. It's a drag having to find it too!
The fule pump relay is a white little plastic box.
You can buy one at the junkyard for $4.00 (in Calif.) They usually don't go bad that often though.

While you are there pick up an extra metal screw clip for the lighter panel!

Ryan gave you the right scoop. After you get the 2 screws out and the panel off the whole fuse tray will pull out. I did this a few months ago because I could'nt hear the fuel pump start when the key was turned on. Turning the key on and off a few times and then I would hear the fuel pump start and then the car would start. The relay should be the white one in the back row. I replaced it (for 60.00!!) and have'nt had a problem since. I found out later that you can take the relay apart and resolder the all the connections for a lot less.

THANKS, Now that I am in there, I put my finger on the relay and when I turn the key to the II position I can feel it click, but the car does not start when I turn it over. Could it still be the relay?

"I put my finger on the relay and when I turn the key to the II position I can feel it click, but the car does not start when I turn it over. Could it still be the relay?"

Maybe yes, maybe no. There are actually 2 relays in that case: System and Fuel.
Turning the key on should "pick" the System relay. That's the click you feel.

But the Fuel relay doesn't pick until the ECU grounds its coil. And that only happens when the ECU gets timing pulses from the Ignition CU, during cranking.

So feel the relay for that 2nd click when you crank it over. If it fails to click when cranking (and you've verified spark at the plugs), it's probably the relay itself. I say that because your LH2.2 ECU is not known for failing to pick the relay, like some LH2.4 ECUs are. Nor are the ICU-to-ECU pulses known to fail with your systems.

It's also possible (but somewhat rare) that the System relay, even though it picks, may not be passing voltage to the Fuel relay coil, ECU, AMM, etc. I've had it happen with 240s with that same relay (but lots easier to get at).

If you have a 12V test light, you could "back-probe AMM terminal 5 by peeling back the boot to see the wire colors. The tail of the blue/yellow wire terminal should show battery voltage from the System relay when energized at Key On.

When you turn the ignition on, the relay has a definite sound to it- you can hear it- But if the car isn't starting that won't be the reason, assuming you checked for spark to the plugs..? You can hear the pump working in the fuel tank by placing a funnel in the fill pipe and bringing your ear to it also.

Sometimes, many times, it's the injector relay and that is also known as the radio suppression relay. It's located on the radiator fill container in the compartment. Usually clipped on there. Here again you can get a replacement for about $4.00 at the junkyard-

As an aside- take the distributor cap off and check it for cracks. Clean it well, and scratch the contacts for the rotor clean to metal. Make sure it is dry
when you replace it. If there is spark- and these items are working, the car should start.
Check the firing order of the plugs, too. I believe it is 1-3-2-4

          Good luck!
