Mahle oil filter on a 240 200

Anybody got any thought on the OC 204 oil filter Vs the Mann 917. Found at a good price but know nothing about the filters. A division of Mahle make piston for GM and their aftermarket piston are very good. I just don't know about the oil filters.

Mahle filters are a high quality German filter. Mahle is a very large automotive part maker headquartered in Stuttgart (home of Porsche). I have used their filters on my 190E Mercedes and my 928, never had an issue with them and always thought their filters where top notch build quality.

Your 240 engine came with Mahle pistons from the factory, the aftermarket 240 pistons (B230F) are also Mahle. The factory uses Mahle filters in some, if not all 5 cylinder engines (V70, S60,...). That being said, the Mann filters are a known quality that is hard to refute.

Mahle oil filter on a 240 200

Hello,

I hope this subject has been raised before, but just in case, I would like to comment on oil filters.

Starting with the B18 engine, the oil filter became a spin on type filter and it came with some special features not found on most filters of the time, an anti-drain back valve and a pressure relief valve.

These features, especially the anti-drain back valve, are CRITICAL to the longevity of Volvo engines with spin on oil filters.

Without the anti-drain back valve, the oil in filter will drain back through the oil pump back into the oil pan, thus causing the engine to run longer without oil pressure during restarts, thus causing premature wear on the engine bearings.

The pressure relief valve is there to allow oil to flow to the engine bearings in case the oil filter element becomes plugged. Better to have non-filtered oil going to the bearings than NO oil going to the bearings.

I use Mann and Mahle oil filters.

I have some customers that insist on original Volvo oil filters ONLY.

Thanks guys. I did know know Factory piston are Mahle. I've never had to tear into an engine. I do know about the anti drain back feature on filters and its importance of longevity. At one point I cut open every oil filter I used and several new one to check their construction & number as well as size of their pleats. I'm out of Mann filter I have not purchased any in about 3 or 4 years. There is a deal on fleabay for about $19.00 and change for a case of 10. I'm going for a couple cases. Greg
