1984 240 Heater Blower Fan Speed 200

Hi All,

Could not find this in the FAQ.

The heater blower speed will work fine on all settings some of the time. Other times the fan will operate below normal speed on all settings and then slowly stop. Other times the blower will not operate at all.

I have checked and cleaned the fuse block (brass ended fuses), checked power to the fan switch (OK), and replaced the fan control switch with no change.

Could this be the dreaded resistor pack failing?

Thanks for any help,

Mike

I applied 12V to the red wire at the blower motor and the blower did not operate. I drilled a hole in the fan housing and used a screw driver to bump the fan impeller and the blower motor ran at about half speed. The problem could be the motor brushes, resistor pack, or motor bearings. I oiled the motor bushings with no change in condition.

The blower motor is original, 222,300 miles on the car!

I will be buying a few adult beverages (and parts) and replacing the blower motor, resistor pack, control valve, switch, and heater core. My thought is do it right as all the parts are original. Did this job once before so it should be a snap this time?

Thanks to all for the help.

Happy Bricking,
Mike

I should add that the blower motor turns over free and does not make the normal "noise of death".

Thanks,
Mike

How does the fan do in speed #4 (fastest). The resistor pack is not in the circuit then, so if the problem continues, it's somewhere in the other wiring.

There are just two leads to the motor itself, black (ground) and red (hot side)>

The black is connected to a ground point found behind the console left side kick panel and towards the firewall. Large gauge wire, If I recall correctly it is bolted to the floor pan.

The red wire, again large gauge, goes to the speed control switch.

If 12V positive is applied to that red wire, the fan should run full speed.

The problems sounds so intermittent that it might be a wire broken inside its insulation, but that's just a SWAG.

Run that test and post back.

Good Luck,

Bob

Sounds like the blower motor is on the way out change if this is the case then you should also change the resister.
Has it started blowing or melting fuses yet?
