cold weather start, erratic idle for a few minutes 700 1987

We are back below freezing temperatures. It is a 745 turbo, and it always starts but does not run well for a while. This time varies by how cold it is. What is likely cause? thanks for your help.

The IAC is a great place to start. If this doesn't solve your problem check for vaccuum leaks at the fuel injectors and intake manifold. When the engine heats up the seals expand sealing the vaccuum leaks. Other Bricksters have checked this using propane sprayed around the seals on a cold engine. If the engine smooths out when the propane is sprayed around a seal then you have found your leak. A lot of people overlook the fuel injector seals as the primary cause.

The turbos tend to pump oil fumes into the intake system. Over time this will build up in the idle air control (IAC) valve. When it's cold the oil deposites are harder and gum up the IAC operation. Take the valve out and spray the heck out of it w/ brake cleaner until the valve mechanism frees up and starts flopping around. If your rubber turbo hoses air oily it means the turbo bypass valve is bad and this will further agrevate the problem and push oil fumes into the IAC gumming up the internal works and brush contacts.

I'm experiencing the same problem. Can you give me a ballpark location on the IAC and Bypass valves? I'd really appreciate it!

The IAC is located under the throttle body. It is a silver cylinder about the size of a large flashlight battery. It has an electrical connection on the end and controls the engine air supply when the throttle is closed. If it doesn't open and the throttle is closed the engine doesn't get enough air to run. It's attached to an about 1 inch diameter hose. The turbo bypass valve is either mounted on the turbo itself or close to it depending on weather you have a Garrett or Mitsubishi turbo. It's supposed to dump intake pressure when the throttle is closed. If it doesn't work the intake system gets overpressurized. This forces oil vapors into the IAC and the rubber intake hoses. You can sometimes see oil leaking out of the IAC electrical plug socket. The rubber intake tubes also develope an oily coating. They should have a dry appearance.

As long as you are under the hood doing that it is probably a good idea to clean the throttle body too. I know on my 92 non turbo 745 it is a fairly consistent issue. Not sure if it is the same on turbos as I haven't had one, but they probably are similar if not the same.
