1988 Volvo 240DL sedan Speedometer Problems 200

I own a 1988 Volvo 240DL Sedan. My question is regarding my speedometer. Recently, it started behaving erratically - randomly jumping to 'zero' and then back up to the correct mph. This happened whenever I a) hit a bump b) accelerated too quickly c) accelerate past 55 mph

More recently, it DOESN’T work more than it does. I heard this could be due to a cracked/loose hose – is this true? Or is it electrical? Or a faulty speedometer?

If it's a faulty speedometer and I need to replace the entire speedometer assembly – would this also repair my odometer which has never worked since I bought it 3 years ago? And how much should this cost (ballpark)?

    I had the jumpy needle issue and it was the contacts where the speedo plugs into the power pins on the instrument panel. Those are the same contacts that the temp compensator board uses looks like to me. Anyway if you bend in the spring contacts so they make solid connection that seems to have fixed the problem.

    But it also sounds like you may have wiring issues on the not working at all problem under there also.

    Dollars to doughnuts that the wire going into the speedo sensor is broken at the rear diff housing. Jack the rear of the car up and look at the wires running to the diff pan. These are the speedo wires. Look for cracked insulation.

    The motion of the rear axle moving up and down causes the speedo to work intermititantly and finally to break.

    I've had this problem on multiple RWD Volvos in our fleet and everytime it was these wires. Just cut the old wire back far enough to "good" wire and crimp on additional wire using the original connectors. You can remove and re-use the connectors by separating them with a jelwer's screwdriver.

    what hose? somebody's confused.

    it's completely electric, from the sensor in the diff to the speedo itself. i suspect a loose connection at the cluster. tighten all the screws on the circuit board and make sure all the connectors are tight. peek at the sensor and make sure the connector isn't trying to fall off. it might be the sensor itself going south. easiest way to find out is to LET IT FAIL. that way, no one's chasing ghosts while it works sometimes. good luck, chuck.

      ...and regarding the odometer, search for "odometer gear" - it is apparently a common problem that the little gear inside the odometer mechanism breaks especially if you re-set the mileage to zero while driving. $29 for the part from odometergears.com, easy to replace.

        Wife's 740 did the same thing, erratic, zero then ok then wiggle, off, on. Jack the rearend up by the diff, put jack stands on the rear jack points ahead of the rear wheels. Let the jack down so the axle drops all the way down. Then unbold the track bar from the axle and swing it up out of the way. The wire from the sensor on hers had too little slack and the wire flexed in the sheathing and finally broke a couple inches back from the connector. If you find a break, clip, strip and butt splice with some silicone sealer at the ends. Pull the harness towards the axle if possible allowing sufficient slack for axle movement. Should cure it, if the pick up is ok in the diff and the speedo is ok.
