Noise from Rear End... I think 120-130 1968

With the weather going warm/cold I've been having a hard time spending much ime under the car lately.

When it's been warm, I've had the driver's windows down and can hear a weird noise reflecting off of retaining walls and passing cars. It seems to be coming from my undercarriage or the rear of the car.

The noise is a flat flimsy sounding tack-spak sort of noise. Imagine if you were dropping small pebbles onto an aluminum pie plate and you have an idea of the sound. It only get the sound while in motion and while braking. The noise persists when I'm in motion in or out of gear (rolling in neutral). It does not seem to speed up or slow down with the engine rpms.

I've been under the car and into the drums and few times adjusting the shoes and replacing my shocks last weekend.

The only idea I've had about the source of the sound is that the limiting strap on the driver's side rear snapped. I'll pull the damaged strap this weekend and see if the sounds stops, but I have my doubts. The strap has been broken for months while I only noticed the sound a couple weeks ago.

Any ideas on this?

I'm midway through a rear-end swap. This axle has had a lot of slop in the gears and I acquired a good 1968 replacement from Mario_E. The replacement has been cleaned and painted and it is now ready for installation.

before and after dropping the original rear, I checked the U-joints and found no play whatsoever. I checked by grabbing either end of the driveshaft and applying twist force to each U-joint. No movement or hint of movement, so I think I'm going to rule them out for the moment.

What I have found so far is that the passenger side drum was very difficult to remove. The brake shoes were moving with the drum and I found that the rear shoe retaining spring had come off. There may have been some shoe edge wear, but the light was fading pretty quick and I had to come in. I'll check again in the morning.

This might be the problem or not. Once I've buttoned up the new rear axle and had a proper test drive I'll know more. At least I'll have reduced the rear end gear slop...

Could possibly be axle/wheel bearing end play. That's controlled by shims between the brake
plate/bearing cover and the axle housing.

might not be the same, but I've heard a "tick, tick, ticking" corresponding to wheel rotation or drive shaft rotation, thought it was somehow brake related, and am wondering if it isn't a dry U-joint. Could that be your situation?

I'm with Danny, favoring a dry U joint. Try depressing the clutch while braking and see if that changes the noise.

      Cheers,

I'll try that - although I've not noticed any change in the noise when clutch/braking so far.

The rear-end U-joint is pretty old (at least 24 years) so maybe it dried out. It's a sealed type so it's conceivable. The front two joints were replaced a year or so ago when I put in a short driveshaft for my overdrive.

I've been under the back recently checking for play in the pinion shaft (there's quite a bit) but did not find any detectable slop in the U-joint.

My only issue with the u-joint is that the noise does not seem to increase or decrease with speed (spin of the driveshaft).

I plan to drop the rear axle and install a different one this weekend. If the noise persists I'll know it's not the axle itself.

Could it be the sound of a nail in a tire ?

I'd check this first, have had this happen a few times as well as small stones get wedged in the tread. Always makes a weird "oh shit, whats wrong now" noise.

Usually the only noise I hear is my exhaust setting off car alarms, ;)
