Light out indicator / Shifter release button 700

I have a "light out indicator" that lights up when I pull in the lock button on the shifter, in park. When pulled into gear it stays on. Put in park, release button and it goes out. Have changed "light out" relay already. I hear a faint relay click when button is pulled but can't find it. What does that button do besides unlock the shifter

That button is to shift the transmission /overdrive mode/downshift prohibiter
    It's not an interlock.

One button is overdrive switch, the other keeps the sifter locked in park. I'm talking about the one that keeps it locked in park. I know what the overdrive button does.

        Al:
Just an idea here: does the ovedrive button always do what it's supposed to do? I'm wondering if the shifter lock button is somehow interfering with the wiring from the O/D button, to the point where, when the lock button is depressed, it causes the O/D switch to "break", from its normal operating position, which is continuity through the O/D circuit. Perhaps the faint click you hear is the O/D relay changing position. Have you tried depressing the lock button whilst driving in top gear to see if it'll cause the O/D to disengage (you probably have...). As far as the bulb failure light is concerned, a glitch in the O/D wiring might be enough to throw an odd load - somehow - into the lighting circuitry. Do ALL of the other indicator lights in the dash function properly?
I've got over 280K (clicks) on my '88 700 and I'm pretty confident that there's no (intentional) electrical activity associated with the shifter lock knob.
        Standing by.
        Garth

I guess I'll have to get inside the shifter and look for wire fraying..... How does the "knob/cover" come off.
With ignition on....all warning lights lit.... depressing the "shifter lock" button makes faint click and dims the "bulb out" indicator light. Depressing the O/D switch functions normall, as it does when driving.
Is there a light that should be coming on when "shifter lock" button is depressed shifted into gear? Thanks, Al

            Al:
As I mentioned in my first response to your thread, I'm working with information pertaining to the 1988 760 series, nothing more recent. Having said that, I'm cetain that there's no (normal) electrical function associated with the Shifter Lock button. There's a two-wire run from the Overdrive Lockout switch in there; the lighting feed to the illuminated shift selector indicator and backup lights/ start inhibit switching are to the outside of the shift lever column proper, right below the lighted indicator panel. This stuff all comes out of the Haynes manuals - 240 and 760 series issues; unfortunately I never got around to acquiring the green book for the 760 wagon. The diagrams and descriptions for the specific models, as you probably know, leave something to be desired, but there's some information to be had. I would suggest as well that you do a search, both in the search box at the top of this page, AND on Google ( because I've found leads to many other sources of information which unfortunately don't find their way to this forum): try "Volvo shifter lock" or the like, and I expect you'll see several hits to peruse. You might even find a source of cutaways as well, but if not, let me know if you'd like a scan of the "typical shift lever assembly" cutaway from one of the manuals here. it'll give you an idea of what's going on under the transmission hump in terms of electricals, and what you might be up against if you go after this snag seriously.
I was exploring a problem with the shift lockout knob in my '98 wagon recently, and found a fair bit of info out there at that time; that's why I'm suggesting a search: it's just that the stuff can be hard to find. As well, don't forget the FAQ - there's a short article about re and re of the shift lockout button itself which might interest you.
            Garth
