B230FT Blown HG = Chunk missing from piston? 700

So I pulled the head off my 88 turbo wagon since it blew the gasket. I noticed the #2 piston has a chunk missing on the exhaust side - not all the way down to the ring but there is a large piece missing from the edge. My dad thought it might have burned away but I'm not sure... has anyone seen this before?? Also, as this is my first HG job, should I be concerned with the fact that there is a large amount of crusty stuff on top of the pistons? Can I get away with just replacing the damaged #2 piston (assuming the others look good)?

Thanks,
Phil

Does the piston look like this from above?

The same piston in the picture looked this when I removed it from the bore.

I threw the engine away and bought a nice U-Pull It engine for $125. It is still running nicely, and that was five and a half years ago.

This is exactly what mine looks like - although the chunk is not as big - I'm going to pull it this weekend and we'll see how far down the damage goes. I can't see any scoring or anything on my cylinder wall, so maybe the ring is still intact?

The hole in the piston in my pictures was caused by detonation. Too much boost, summer weather, and cheap gas.

I think you will be replacing the motor.

      Beautiful pics!! 700

That one is a little too far gone for a bore and ring job :)
I bet the piston slap was a little pronounced!

    Phil,

I rebuilt a NA block for school and I was the better part of 2 grand into it before I was done. I might look for a good used block from the junk yard.

If you are going to get really into the motor it will be worth your time to do it right. (pistons only come in sets of 4), replace all the bearings, gaskets, etc. HOWEVER, before you drop a penny into parts, pull the crank down and the pistons out and drop the block off at a machine shop and have them check it over. Make sure you didn't do something REALLY bad.

The black to light gray crusty stuff is CARBON i.e. you were running a bit rich; perhaps related to the missing chunk?

How does the turbo look? Does the exhaust side look like it passed a chunk of piston?

    Andrew
