The alternator is the most likely culprit, especially if it is the original one. Mine finally gave up the ghost last summer after 24 years of service. If you're going to replace the alternator, I'd also replace the battery cables and the main ground wire from the alternator to the engine. Check the grounding cables also.

Even if the brushes themselves went bad, I'd still replace the alternator or have it rebuilt by a shop that specializes in automotive electronics. I took mine in for a rebuild but the mechanic said that it couldn't be rebuilt because of its age and wear. So he gave me an identical rebuilt unit.

That exciter wire also is a suspect. It's amazing to think that one bad wire could bring your car to a complete halt.

Another possible gremlin is the original engine wiring harness which often crumbles its insulation, causing shorts. I had mine replaced years ago.

    Good luck.

Alternator brushes gave out their last volts. Your battery is dead from firing the spark plugs and keeping the engine running.

If the red exciter wire is disconnected from the alternator, the idiot lights (eg. amp) don't come on in accessory position prior to starting the car. And because it is disconnected, the system doesn't charge and the car runs off the battery till it goes flat.

So check to see if that red wire is connected and amp light comes on (then goes off when car is started).
