Break-in-oil 444-544

This question goes along with my question on diesel oil. I amd getting ready to reassemble my B18 (1965) engine. Anybody got any re-assembly tips and any advice on any special oil to use for the first few miles?

    Break-in-oil 444-544

For first start up, I use an older-rated straight 30W (check the API rating on the bottle -- should say SL or earlier, SM doesn't have the good additives), plus a 4 oz. bottle of Clevite "Cam Gard", Federal Mogul CL400, or similar cam lube mixed in.

Get everything set up so the engine starts with as little cranking as possible -- prime the carbs with fresh gas in the float bowls, set the static timing, battery fully charged, etc. -- and then run it at around 2000 RPM for at least 20 minutes. Do NOT let it idle during this time.

After that, drain the oil, discard the filter, and let it cool all the way down. Retorque the head and readjust the valves, install new filter, add the oil I mentioned in the other thread. Drive the car -- I wouldn't rev past 4000 right at first, but brief pulls under full throttle are good for getting the rings seated.

After 100 miles, drive it however you want. Change oil and filter again at 500 miles, and then you can go on your regular schedule. Power will continue to improve for another 1000 miles or so as everything breaks in.
