There are no good Acura forums all the people who post are boneheads and think that they belong on the fast and the furious!! My question is... I just replaced my clutch cable today, and I don't know how far to tighten it. I tightened it just enough to get it in gear. Can I over tighten? Do I need to break it in? It make a faint wining noise when I depress the clutch. Please Help I am also a volvo 240 owner I promise I am not an impostor lol.

    I am, of course, totally unfamiliar with an Acura clutch. But let me share some thoughts from years ago (~45 years ago, actually) when I worked my college summers in a clutch and brake shop. The principles of how a clutch works haven't changed much, I think.

    Basically the adjustment is always a compromise:
    1) Ideally you want to adjust it so that there is plenty of play -- defined by how far you have to step on the clutch before it starts to release. That is, think of it as slack in the cable, because you want to maximize the pressure that squeezes them together. If there is little or no play (viz., "can I over tighten?" Yes, you can!), there is a likelihood that the pressure may diminish over time, and this will let the plates slip and burn the clutch.
    2) On the other hand, you want to adjust it so that when the pedal is depressed as fully as you can comfortably step on the pedal (realizing that you're going to do that very often, you want to be comfortable), the plates are fully separated, to ease shifting and wear on the synchros.
    So I would adjust it loose, so that you have to press the pedal pretty far -- and it sounds like you did it right (viz., "just enough to get it in gear").

    Do you have an Acura manual? I don't know the Acura's tightening mechanism at all, but there might be a measureable indication of the slack in the cable, or the position of a nut, something you can compare to some specs in a manual.

    You may need to readjust after a while -- depending on the material of the clutch's friction material, and how the facing was prepared prior to installation. At least, that's the way it was decades ago :-).

    You hear it when the car is stationary? That faint whining noise could be a throwout bearing (it only spins when the clutch pedal is depressed) -- you did replace that along with the clutch, right (I hope)? In the old days, it's lifespan (permanently greased) was only about the same as the clutch.
    Or maybe the clutch faces aren't fully separated, and it's a transmission shaft spinning against synchros -- is slipping into gear (e.g., first) smooth and silent, or "crunchy"?

    I may be out-of-date, but I hope this helped a little, at least. :-)

      I'm old school too. I would have stated it the same as you. So we are both OK or we are way outdated. : )
      Teh only slight difference is I would have said, " Adjust the Turnbuckle type adjuster on the "Z" bar."
      It does sound like his Throw out bearing is unhappy.

      lol. Check my past responses j/k. 1988 It is a 240 dl, It totaled out a suburban. It is now maroon with a white hood and finder.

        I'd personally be happier if it had totalled out a rice burner... still pi$$ed about the Sube that took out my above-average '97 850.
