Cam bearings? 700 1991

Does the B230FT have camshaft bearings? My head came back from the machine shop with the cam out, per our arrangement - I am to do the valve adjustments. But there were only the caps that hold the cam on. No bearings, and I can not find bearings on either FCP, Tasca Volvo, or IPD's web sites. Thus the question: does this thing have cam bearings?

Do you mean the cam just sits in the saddles, and the caps just bolt on without any separate bearings or shells inserted?

No bearing shells--the cam journal sit in the saddles directly. Be sure to lube them before final assembly.

I never had to work on the volvo Head yet so I didn't think about it before. You are telling me that The Cam sits in an Aluminum Head without a bearing to wear and be replaced?? I would think the Head would wear out in a very short time. Mmebers of the BB that have had their Timing Belts break or Cam sprocket spin because of a frozen Cam.... what do they do to fix it, replace the entire Head?

Yep.

They usually don't last much over about 500,000 miles.

Many engines with frozen cam bearings have been resurected by pulling the cam out, cleaning the fried aluminum off the cam bearing surfaces, cleaning up the saddles and caps a bit, verifying oil circulation to the top end, and then putting it all back together again.

This has been more of a problem on the B21 engines due to not have as good of oil circulation to the top end as the the B230's. Not changing the oil regularly increases the chances. I know - it happened to me on our old 83 240.

I guess the Cam floats pretty good on the oil. That just amazes me. I would thought a design like this would cause a failure at around...40K miles.

My thoughts exactly about a steel cam spinning in aluminum saddles.

Bearings don't do much once the oil pressure builds, the cam/crankshaft just floats on a layer of oil. Ever scratch the shell of a crankshaft bearing? It's really soft metal.
