240 92 EGR temp sensor 200

So just a few days ago I was bragging how nice the Mrs. car was running after I gave her a nice tuneup and cleaned out the EGR, flame trap, throttle body, etc, etc. Took her (the car) to work and low and behold the "Check Engine" light came on. Pulled codes, #2 - nada. #6: 4-1-3. Looked it up in bently/hanes - couldn't find nuthin, thank God for Brickboard, again..."EGR temp sensor signal missing or faulty". So my three questions are:
1. What, is there a special Bently/Hanes edition that has the rest of the (codes) story? Or is there a secret society that holds back on the meaning of unpublished secret codes?
2. Now what do I do? "cleaned out EGR" means I removed it and checked for valve operation, sprayed some carb cleaner in there (but not in the diaphragm), and cleaned it up a little but didn't get real physical w/ it other than trying to take the nipples off to add some neverseize (that didn't work out- couldn't get them off).
3. Code erase procedure? I tried to reset the codes to see if it was a fluke, but could not. Put plug in numba 6 and pushed button for more than 5 secs, LED came on for 3-4 secs and then went out. But the code is still there.
Thanks for your help in advance!

    I have a '91 240.

I was wondering if your '92 has the electric vacuum solenoid mounted on the fender.

One vacuum line is yellow. I think it source. It has to go on the proper port. There is a small dot of yellow paint on one if it hasn't worn off.

The one I have, had a small foam rubber filter/shield under the little cap. It had rotted and a piece had gotten suck into a port hole under it. I replaced it with a pinch of polyester fiber fill, for a filter. That stuff won't rot.

The valve couldn't turn on the EGR. Same code.

The computer looks for the sensors to have a change in value (ohms). The heated one on the incoming side to match the other one that gets hotter after turn on in prescribed time in the ECU program.

The sensors should be approximately equal at the same temperature. Plus or minus some manufacturing tolerance value allowance. But basically its not highly critical unless they don't change or match.

I don't recall the service mileage requirement for the EGR. Its been three years since my episode.

Because of it, I got a good running car. A local non Volvo mechanic shop couldn't find the problem. He was charging for guessing. The $450 Air mass meter was the final straw for the daughter. After the other $500 & $800 bills.

They decided to put the money into new car payments.

I got the repair bills since new. Between the parents and daughter they spent as much as the car cost originally. In low mileage nonsense suspension noise fixing by dealers. Rear shocks, bushings and struts.

A new water pump that a year and half later, starts to weep. Next service the head gets pulled. They replace seals, timing belt and you guess it, another water pump. Over $1200.

Between all the service papers notes, it read like the upper seal on the pump was leaking but no mentioned it exist. The head gasket was being blamed. "Recommended on the next service, it could catch it all".
    Translated to....."Bring Us Money"

Greed or incompetence. Check Engine Lights. They can be better than the insurance companies at getting people to give up their fine cars!

Brick Board knowledge.... it ... is .... Power.

    Phil

Thanks Chris, I keep forgetting that detail, the LED went off after the light (in my brain) went on. So re-set the codes, but it came back on, however got lucky - I'd apparently not re-connected the EGR wire correctly and it had popped loose whilest tooling down the highway. Reconnected, ok now, good thing cuz I'd be looking at a new $81 temp sensor, and if I couldn't get the old one off a new EGR too.
BTW meaured the resistance - it was 219 kOhms, way higher than spec, but that was on a cold car on a 45 degree morning (cold for FL). Haven't had a chance to measure while warm, but I think if the sensor was bad, it would trip the code again.

Can't help with te hEGR problem. What I can say is I pain stakenly tried over and over again with the bentley book at my side to Clear the codes. I was on a mission one afternoon. Still couldn't do it. On my '89 I could just pull teh 25 Amp fuse on the inner fender. You have a different setup on your '92
