clutch cable hole position in firewall 200 1989

Hi all,

I have started converting my '89 240 from AW71 to an M47.
I used a doner car from a friend, took all the parts typical for this job, and also a new clutch, bearing, and cable, and a couple seals while I was there. The other car has now been junked.

I have installed the pedal assembly.

My next step is to drill the hole for the cable. I have found photos to show me the position, they are referenced from the left of a diamond shaped cap with two bolts on the firewall to the right of the master cylinder. Problem is on my car - I do not have this diamond shaped two bolt cover. The space to the right of the master cylinder is pretty much empty.

Can anyone provide me with a clear photo or diagram or measurement of where the hole is exactly? I want to do it from the engine firewall side, I have a right angle drill and hole saw bit for metal at the appropriate diameter, just need to X mark the spot!

Thanks in advance,

My kid has my camera but looking at the firewall, There's a threaded insert welded to the firewall, From the center of that. 1.375 toward the fender and 1.25 down from the center should get you very very close.

Hi Dan,

I would have imagined someone out there has an M47 car and a camera. That area is completely clear and accessible on them, isn't it?

Otherwise ignore the diamond shaped adapter, which I understand is the mounting for the hydraulic master for 260s as well as the grommet for this turbo's hose, and use the center of the radiused opening in the firewall as the "X".

HA HA Art. I hope that wasn't a referrence to my swap issues...

Anyway, Greg - JUST did this task and finished about a week ago - there WILL be some things you will miss taking care of during the swap...
Albeit, about 99% of it is still fresh in my head AND I am currently compiling all the 70 pictures I took with captions and "arrows" on them.

Yes, Tim, that's the post referenced by the copy and paste URL Dan provided. Dan is probably not aware of how much I had to clear out of the way on the 242Ti to get that photo. But like I said, it was all good; I pulled about a half pound of organic material out of the inner fender recess once I got in there.

Glad to hear you got pictures. They should help a lot of swaps.

OK, that makes sense, I could probably move wires around also to get better access. Dan

Just need to know how to post pics here - like you do - where it pops right up on the screen...

Art
Access looks worse to me with more wires in the way, the plate is just below the cable.
The cruise control vac hose is shown in the upper left of the pic.

Thanks to both of you!

perfect, I think I should be able to eye it now at +/- 2mm error, so it's good.

Getting the drill ready...

Thanks,
Greg

In this shot of an 83 automatic, this is where I think the clutch cable would enter.

Got it!

Thanks Art, that is exactly where I put it.

It was so dead on, that when I went under the dash to slide in the cotter pin, the cable has actually slid right into place and was perfectly aligned.

Regarding the hole, with a Dewalt hole saw it went through in about 4 seconds.

Job done!

Next is under the car.... we'll see when I have a chance for that, as it put the car out of comission.

ciao!
