Read up in the 700/900 FAQ. Pretty good info.

The rear bushing in the strut rod lasts forever it seems. I didn't see any reason to replace the main control arm bushing either. It's the front cone bushings that need done most often. This is a good time for ball joints, too.

It's not too hard to do cone bushings and ball joints at all, provided that you have an assortment of *big* sockets... up to 22mm or 24mm, I think.... and a breaker bar.

The other bushings in the front end will most certainly require a shop press.

I'am assuming you are speaking to the front suspension. If so, each side, left and right, has one control arm and one control arm stay. At least this is true with my '90 760GLT. I replaced front and rear suspension parts this past fall and can give you some tips along with any other contributors.

A couple of starters would include the Haynes manual. I got a copy from IPD. I also communicated with TascaVolvo parts. When I chose to use genuine Volvo parts, I called TascaVolvo and told them I was interested in doing this suspension work. They faxed me exploded view schematics of the suspension. I then studied the diagram and picked out the parts I wanted to order. When I called back for the order, both TascaVolvo and I were on the "same sheet of music". We spoke the same part names, quantities and part numbers. Much easier. So between the manual and the diagrams, I was off to a less risky start. I also ordered appropriate bolts/washers/nuts. In the past I hated having to drop my work and chase around town looking for comparable fasteners. Also, I have learned that Volvo part prices have been reduced.

I did encounter an unusual problem with the "joint" between the control arm and its stay. The two are separated by two "cone" bushings. The bushings are reinforced with a steel ring. I found the rubber slam worn out allowing the buried ring to be exposed and come in contact with the control arm mating surface. Too much damage to the control arm to save it, so I replaced the arm (both left and right sides).

Good luck with the planning phase. I'll try to look for your progress.

Mike
