As I was putting in new felt in the rear main cover, I noticed a deep groove on the other side (inside the cover) Is there something that goes in there?
Please forgive all my stupid questions, but I'm trying to rebuild this thing and I really need help. I try to do as much research as I can before I bother you guys but sometimes I can't find the info anyplace else.

If ever, for any reason, I had a B18/B20 out of the car and the flywheel off, I would simply not even consider not upgrading to the later design neoprene seal... Not only is it simply a better design, but since you're already there and with the engine out, it'll be a snap to get properly centered.

Imagine the hassle of doing the upgrade later, pull transmission, bell housing, clutch, flywheel... and even then you're working awkwardly under the car with bad light trying to get that thing centered just right...

Not worth it, man... an engine rebuild is a significant job. Don't skimp on the rear seal.

Hello,

That groove is where oil collects and then returns to the pan via the hole in the bottom of the groove.

Do you know that you can have the old style cover machined to except the newer style seal?,unless the machine shop is really busy you should get a pretty good turnaround time,the last time I had one done I think they charged me $30.00 and had it back the same day.

Hello,

The felt seal is retained by a large flat ring and a large wire clip that goes in that groove.

I thought you were going to get an updated rear seal housing.
