740 front brake question 700

I'm replacing the front rotors and calipers on my 92 740. Having trouble getting a match. The Rotors are 280 mm dia, vented. The calipers are single pot. No ABS
Can't find any manufacturer's markings on the calipers (pretty crudded up). What make would they be ?

    740 front brake question 700

Single piston front calipers are only Girling. Those aren't used on non ABS 700s/900s, since the non ABS cars have dual front brake lines and double piston calipers.

You can identify the calipers by looking at the brake pads. Go to the 700/900 FAQ and look under Brakes.

Your rotors will be 11.25", and will have dual piston calipers if the car does not have ABS.

John, definitely no ABS and single piston. Looks like Girling from Autopartswarehouse parts photos.

        740 front brake question 700

It's been a while, but my 89 740 was non-ABS and I'm pretty sure it was a single piston caliper with the sliding mechanism. I replaced the front pads and discs in an Autozone parking lot, and by the book they handed me the wrong parts, but when I carried the old ones in, they had the correct ones too.

I've never seen one like that.

My bet is Girling. Post a picture if you can.

I just got the rotors. The type that matched was "Girling, with ABS" But there is no ABS pickup ring on my car! Picture coming soon.

I'd like to see pictures of the caliper. What series of brake pads did you use?

John, here is the caliper. The RH one (this one) is "Volvo / Lucas) 1551/1 while the LH one is Girling 1551/2. Both identical.

740 front brake question: FAQ Edits Needed 700

Steve, turns out I have Girling, single pot, with ABS components. But the ABS option is not enabled on my car. Aside from this confusion, the job went OK. as far as I can see, the only difference was the "withoutABS" rotor was thinner.
                  Case closed.

                Art,

As best as I remember, that's what they looked like on my 89 740 w/o ABS. I can't remember if it took the larger or smaller disc, but it did take the cheaper of the two.
