How do I go about get a new key for my 1987 245

What Art and Kentucky suggested. Starting from some point in the 80's Volvo can supply keys from the serial number. Bring your title or registration to the dealer parts dept.--or if you've been a customer there give them a call first--Dave

For my 83 Benz, I ordered a new one from the dealer for about $17. Pretty good since its a laser cut key and locksmiths want $40 to $90 to make a duplicate from my original.

I would think you could do the same with a Volvo, but I never tried.

Though it has been a while since I've tested it, dealers would snip out a blank (purchased from them) gratis, from the VIN, with proof of ownership (title or reg.).

This was an ignition and trunk set for a 79.

These folks always treated me right.

Yup, Art, that's what I had in mind.

I think ordering by the VIN is more likely to be a good fit and cost less than having a locksmith make one up from the tumbler. Of course it only works if the ignition is original.

There is someone on e-bay who sells the correct Volvo key blank. Once you have the correct blank, any locksmith can cut the key for you. I think that he gets about 8 bucks for an original Volvo blank. I bought a couple from him a couple of years ago, just to have some spares on hand. I had them cut, and tested them. They worked just fine. I still have my original sets, along with the valet key.
