'76 Air Pump 200

My '76 244 developed a worrying noise after a couple 4hr highway trips on the weekend. I am pretty sure that the bearings in the air pump are going or gone- either way, the thing is squealing like crazy. Of course most 240s don't have this beast, so I am thinking of just getting rid of it. Does anyone know the proper way to do it? A Quick look last night in the dark made it seem like I'll need a new exhaust manifold...

If I *do* need parts, will the car run ok if I just take the belt off of the pump?

Thanks

Your car will run fine without the air pump being driven. If you are going to go that route you might as well remove all the hardware. A good hardware or indy auto parts store will have threaded plugs that will close the holes in the exhaust manifold--or snip the pipes just above the fittings and braze the stubs shut. -- Dave

Good! That is what I was hoping for and expected. Thanks for the response.

I don't have the car to look at right now, but I know there is a hose going to the pump. Do I just plug it's origin or does it need to get looped somewhere?

EDIT: Also, if anyone happens to know exactly what size plug I'll need, post it up. I'll pick one up today. I can't wait to get rid of that thing!

If your car has to pass emissions testing in CT, it may not pass. In NC even though they don't use a sniffer, the look to make sure all of the emissions equipment is in place.

I thought of that, and I will keep the pump once it is off just in case, but fortunately, '76 is exempt from emissions testing.
