Hello,
I was reinstalling my camshaft yesterday andf I got a couple of questions about that.
First, The repair manual calls for sealant or the front and rear cap bearings. I put red RTV silicone. Is that ok?

On the rear camshaft bearing on the head part there is a circular scratch. Width is about the same as the oil hole. Should I leave it like that? The car is not as clean as to justify a new head if it can work like that.

On the camshaft "bearing surfaces" there is a groove on the rear one , and the front one. Shuld they be there or were the grooves done by the same object that scratched the bearing cap?

Thanks for the answers everyone.
I think I will remove the caps just to be sure and clean them.
If I do that can I remove the front cap and leave the cam seal in place or do I have to reinstall it by removing the timing belt and the cam sprocket?

i wouldnt remove the silecone or the front cap, usless you used soo much silecone its squished out the sides.

Hello Mike,
It's squished but by a very small amount. This is the reason I'd like to clean it out and reinstall the caps.
But Can I just remove the front cap and put it back or should I reinstall the cam seal after the cap is cleaned and installed and the cam gear is removed?

i have just removed the cap then re-installed the cap.
i wouldnt pull the cam gear. just trim off the excess silecone.

Don't use RTV anywhere inside your engine. I don't even allow that junk in my shop. Just a dab of Permatex brown gasket maker is all you need on the bearing caps to keep them from leaking oil.

Usually just have to put a little sealant in the two corners of the front and rear bearing caps just to prevent oil seepage. I'd say leave the "scratches" and "grooves" alone if the engines running fine and the oil pressure is good. Maybe run a slightly higher viscosity oil? I'm in SoCal and use 20/50 in my '88 year round with 230K miles.

Hi and thanks for the answer. So I shouldn't worry about having to remove the RTV that I installed on the 2 capbearings?
I wouldn't like it to clog oil passages.It's a good idea to use a higher viscoity oil. But I'll have to check what is the highest viscosity Volvo recommends for the turbo engine.

If it is just a dab as it should be to seal that corner bend in the gasket, I would not worry.

I probably wouldn't bother if it was just a tiny dab of the goop. Do yourself a favor and throw the remainder of the RTV in the trash.

For a turbo car, I like full synthetic 10-30, usually Mobil 1. For a non-turbo car, I run Shell Rotella 15-40 dino oil, but their synthetic is good also.
