fuel lines on transfer pump - '83 240 200 1983

My green beauty has died a couple times, then it runs for awhile, and now will start sometimes and run reeeeally rough. Seems like it might be the fuel transfer pump. I was going to investigate, but the fuel lines on the top of the pump just will not come off. I push it back hard and it bounces right back up to where it was. Am I missing something here?

thanks

fuel lines on transfer pump - '83 240 200 1983

Hi there,

Yes, the older ones (before 86) were a bit different. The return line is nylon, heat-fitted over a barbed fitting but covered with a rubber sheath that looks like a fat hose.

This can be trouble, because the way to remove the hose, if you don't want to cut it, is to disconnect it at the flare fitting over the axle where it joins the steel tubing. Depending on your location, that could be a blob of rust or an easy job squeezing a couple flare wrenches. So some have just cut the nylon at the sender and replaced a section with 5/16" ID fuel-rated hose and clamps. The pressure is not high there, it is just dumping fuel back into the tank.

The big hose for the outlet is just a hose. It shouldn't push back. But beware, the hose is hard to procure if you choose to cut, squash, or otherwise impair it for re-use.
