b20- Custom header hates generator should I use my 760 alt? 120-130

Hello All,

So I got some custom headers- stahl, and they just keep knocking on the generator? The measurement must have been of half an inch?!

So I tried to loosen the bracket on the block to slide the generator up and down out of the way. No good.

So I was thinking removing the upper and lowe brackets from the block and welding them on the pass. firewall along with the installation the 70 amp 760 alt.

I haven't tried to fit the alt yet I just had time to eye it up before hail and darkness took over?

I know there are better more costly ways but I'm an over-organized underpaid teacher so diy is king ;)

All input is appreciated!

Cheers greendread

Have you tried a shorter belt?

You definitely don't want your alternator attached to the firewall... it must be attached to the engine.

I have seen custom brackets that fit the alternator on the drivers side of the engine, up high... generally made from a A/C bracket....

Header issues I've had are more in conflict with alternators than generators, but I'm not familiar with the header you have...

      Cheers Matt,

A shorter belt? I didn't think of that? I was thinking a longer belt- slid the generator down the bracket farther away from the engine just missing the header... The generator is where i would place the alt... the alt is shorter than the generator so I may be able to bolt the bracket on the b lock and fit the atl just below the bend in the #2 pipe off the header?

Also Any idea what the block off plate is on the right top side of the block?
Its keeping the header from lying flush to the block... i may need to trim it.

      Cheers,

Is this a new header? Doesn't sound well-engineered to me.
The plate is where the pipe to the oil cooler would attach if you had one.
If the header flange is the right size it should NOT interfere!

          Thanks George!

It is a NOS custom built header for the B20 engine. It was never bolted, the overlap it less than an inch?!

I thought I would buzz off the troublesome bit.

I've always wanted to get one of those oil coolers...

          Thanks a ton!

If you are driving on the highway at anything like normal speeds you probably will get enough cooling from
            air blowing around the pan.
Should probably grind the edge off the header flange rather than the one that keeps coolant in.
