I have a 96 960 that has no dash lghts when key is on and all I can here is the fuel pump start but nothing else ,I thought it was the ignition switch and changed that but no difference at all .It has been doing this intermittently (sp.) for the last month but now there is nothing any ideas where to look would be appreciated thanks Peter

possibly a bad connection to the dash. I've had an unable to start situation in the past where I've been messing about with the dash connections and nothings lit and nothing works. Follow the FAQ for dash removal and draw it forward. You'll need to crane your neck to look at the back of the dash and check the security of the connector blocks, one of them I remember is some sort of once-only connector and if someones taken it off in the past it'll probably only be a loose fit which may fall off quite easily if you've gone over a bump, I had to bodge mine a bit tighter with some insulating tape. The other's are full on block connectors and no problem.

No connection at the dash means your ignition warning light doesnt come on so your alternator doesnt get excited - i think.

With the engine off, but key ON, foot on brake, try rowing your gearshift level from P to L about 20-30 times to clean the contacts on the PNP sensor, then see if it starts. If it doesn't, then turn the key to START and hold it there while you move the gearshift lever SLOWLY forward until the starter motor engages, or move it SLOWLY backwards to see if the starter will engage. If either of these 2 procedures works, then the problem is most likely with your PNP sensor.

tht was one of the first things I suspected but even if it is bad ,the dash lights would still come on wouldn't they there are no lights on the dash or anything ,but I can hear the fuel pump start and nothing else not even the radio will light up. That is why i am at a loss because these cars are generally fairly simple .
