Towing/Transporting a non running brick long distance. 700

I'm in the market for a 740/940 and see a few opportunies for nonrunning bricks outside my local area.

What is the best way to get a disabled brick to my home where I can get it in good running order? I'm looking at a few that are located from one to three hours away.

Brick on Brick action 700

I would like to tow a brick with my brick.

I have the nice volvo hitch on my turbo and have the transmission cooler.

However, the manual says the towing capacity is 3300 pounds and a brick weighs about 4000 lbs. I would think a car with the transmission cooler would have a higher capacity but it didn't list any differences.

So has anyone towed liked this with no ill effects? Uhaul's website says it won't work for that combination so will they still rent a dolly?

I did once, using the V8 (see pic).

The Uhaul guy was reluctant but finally gave in. I think Uhaul's concern is with braking, and double the weight to deal with. But I had no braking or hill climbing issues pulling an '83 245 turbo from Hartford CT to Central NY.

The dolly is probably the bright idea.

However, I have twice or three times had aged cars to tow, where I did not mind drilling 1/2" holes in the bumper, adding bolts, and using the type of tow bar that that Rvs use to pull their smaller vehicles. Find it at WalMart. Add lights, and safety chain.

It works real well with strong Volvo bumpers.

But it is probably not real smart, all things considered. Not meant to be done, after all.

Just be sure to disconnect the drive shaft at the axle. Tie it out of the way.
