M46 sloppy shifter 700 1988

The shifter in my 88 740T manual trans. is pretty sloppy. I can't get positive shifts in it the way I can in my 1800 with M41. Are there bushings that can be replaced or adjustments that can be made to make this shifter more precise?

    The universal joint that connects the horizontal shift rod to the transmission input has created some serious sloppiness. It's a primitive device, looks like a little barrel in the picture posted. Has two short (5 or 6 mm diameter?) pins which can wear, as can the holes they go through. Have to remove the tranny to get at it. You can probably feel if there's slop there, once the shift lever is disconnected from the horizontal rod.

      thanks for the advice. Did you mean to post a picture? If so, I am unable to find it. Any chance you could email it?
      Also, would I be able to make the repair simply by dropping the rear end of the trans, or does the whole thing need to be removed?

        I was referring to the picture in Goatman's first message. It's the silver barrel that lives on the shifter rod in the gap between tranny and overdrive. I don't think you can access it without pulling the tranny; at least I couldn't...

    Hi,


    There are two plastic bushings that go into the holes on the end of the shift shaft (shown without bushings).

    Place a small o-ring on the bushing for the drivers side when installing new ones. This helps too.
