Single Sealed Beam Headlight source? 200

I work around the downtown Garland area (NE of Dallas) and I see MANY of the Volvo WIA64 DayCab trucks owned and operated by YRC (Yellow + Roadway Trucking) and it seems each of them have the "2nd Option" of headlight. I've really grown to like this circular look for the 240 fascia... Seems to be a "retro" appeal.

Today I'll be venturing over to one of YRC's yards in Irving to see just what they do when the hood of one of these trucks gets damaged... I've sent eMails concerning this and NO reply.

If this goes well and I find I'm not alone in this alteration maybe I can secure a supply of these oddities.

I'd love to hear how you make out!

Has anyone thought of using the stock headlamp lenses as a "plug" to mold fiberglass moldings/fairings? I suppose you could then find a simpler way to mount an H4 fixture.

Ryan,

You beat me to the post, an FG plug mold based on an original headlight would work nicely. That being said, has anyone taken the time to "photo shop" a set of these headlights into a picture of a 240? My initial thought is that Studebaker made the same oops for years on the Avanti, just add a grill in the middle of the following link and you might see my point.

Of course, the above is personal opinion about style only that could be swayed by a good accurate photo shop rendition. My personal opinion is that E-codes are the way to go for significantly improved lighting performance... something a glass port-hole of a head light from the US can't provide!

Great point!

I have the same cosmetic reservations... just couldn't think of an example! :-)

Another point to consider is that if you're considering doing the "single round" thing, you really ought to throw down for some nice H4 headlamps to make it worthwhile. Those aren't cheap. That same money put towards E-codes might bring them into the "affordable" range. I put some old, used Volvo E-codes and relays on the '87 dog hauler just this last week. It's worth it!

Count me in (sealed beam conversions) .... 200

re: "...If this goes well and I find I'm not alone in this alteration maybe I can secure a supply of these oddities...."

Count me in on your headcount for those interested.

If you can't get the parts, please at least give a list of the parts.

I once got some prices of just the bezels (which seemed to be just fiberglass covers), and what I was told by a dealer was p/n 8026546, for WIA heavy trucks = $218.37 each

Of course, that price is out-of-sight -- maybe, hopefully, it was wrong info. And it didn't include the mounts to hold and allow adjustment for the 7-inch round headlights, which no doubt cost even more than the fiberglass bezels.

Thanks.

Used Condition is the target 200

I'm heavily leaning towards the Used condition due to the inflated prices I saw at the Volvo Truck Dealer.

So if you're wanting only the NEW OLD STOCK type thing be prepared to be disappointed - I'll be probing some shops that also do body work and talk my way into gaining access to some junkyards...
I read a year ago AND confirmed with a ex-trucker/vietnam vet co worker that many Tractor Trailer Junkyards need to see some sort of licensing here, in Texas, to purchase select parts. I doubt the headlights are even on the list, but I'm willing to bet there will be an exclusivity issue to just browse the yard.

Here's a pic the headlights 200

I see these headlights nearly every day.. too bad they are always in motion! lol
I had a closer examination and there are 4 screws that seat the plastic bezel. Exposed like the screws for the turn signals.

ALSO, kinda a Update on the matter of compatibility... I had a guy pull the normal headlights associated with the WIA64T and he pulled the EXACT same headlights and brackets we have (and it was $120) this came with turnsignals and some rather lengthy connection cables... The part number for the "2nd Option" style is listed in two forms:
164616-0008 < used for Bruckner Dealers
3081514 < Volvo listed Part #

I would be very interested in what you find out. Always interested in viable lighting options. My plastic lenses are way past their prime.

If you find something out, I WANT TO KNOW! I'm liking my plastic headlights less and less, but also hate the thought of $300 for half-decent aftermarket e-codes.

I'm tempted to put on the thinking cap, survey the materials I have at hand, and custom fabricate some single round headlight brackets.

Ya know - I've been cooking on that idea of the fabrication... here's what I got:
I pulled some Projection Lenses (3) from an old 70" Mitsubishi TV.
They're about 5" dia and I got the entire casing and attachments.
I've got some rather yellowed out lenses I wouldn't mind holepunching and placing the P-Lenses over the headlight bulb. My main concern is that the DEPTH of the P-lenses are about 3.5" and I can tell they will interfere with the tip of the bulb if I want a near flush-mount... I've even dabbled with the idea of cutting not only the hole in the lense BUT also cutting the back cone of the housing and merging it into a tube to better fit...
well this is a pipe dream: the P-lenses disperse the light in a WIDE spectrum and I'm sure to blind people at certain ranges while not having much light for myself.... more research!
