Water pump disaster. PLUGGED A HOLE IN THE BLOCK AND IT WORKS! 200 1991

For those following my Brick saga. I accidently perforated the #1 cylinder while replacing the water pump. With the head off, you can see the hole. I have a picture of it, but don't know how to download it. Anyway, I decided to try to repair the block. After much helpful info from this site, I didn't trust myself to pull it off. I took it to the best mechanic around here (I'm in Pa., but he's on the Jersey side.) At first he didn't want to do it. He wasn't sure it would work. I talked him into it and promised to pay his hourly rate, no matter what. He's a great mechanic. And to his credit, he didn't laugh in my face when I told him about my boneheaded mistake.

This guy did it. He put a steel set screw in the cylinder wall, grinded it down on the piston side, and put the head back on with new gaskets, etc. When I started up the car, it smoked for about an hour, burning out the anti-freeze from the exhaust system. Then it purred along fine.

Now it runs fine. Better than ever. I drove it today for about three hours in all kinds of traffic. No smoke from the tailpipe.

It was an expensive mistake, but I'm glad my car's rolling again. Thanks to everyone for their terrific ideas and suggestions.

Best,
Cuddy

Great going there, Cuddy. Glad to hear it worked. I might suggest a preemptive strike with some stop leak in the cooling system.

Thanks Charley, that's a great suggestion. I have to put antifreeze in it anyway. There's only water in it now, because there was no sense wasting more antifreeze if it didn't work. I drove it 70 miles today, no problem. Will change out the oil filter and few other things too when time allows. Only a Volvo can withstand this kind of hammering.

THat's awesome.. I love it! I hope it holds up

I wonder... where that piston was 'parked' when you drilled. If it's working though, I reckon it's safe to assume you didn't drill into a ring...

You've been so good to keep us updated on the situation....Thanks for that! I'm sure you'll let us know if it fails..

      Matt,

piston was parked in low position,I believe. I don't think I hit it when I drilled, but I couldn't see the side of the piston with the head off. Once I figure out how to post the picture you can see the hole.

You're right. If I hadn't drilled the hole myself, I would've never learned this kind of repair was possible. It was a real learning experience. Thanks for all your help, by the way.

      Best,
      Cuddy
