Blower motor turned into a heater core replacment...what else should I do now that I am there? 200 1987

I took yesterday to replace my blower motor. All was going fantastic, I had the motor out by 9:45 AM. I had thought I had a leak in the floor pans of my car because the interior would be wet after a rain but it always took forever to dry out.

When I took off blower housings, I found that although I may have a leak in the exterior of my car; I also had a heater core problem. Before doing anything else, I pressure tested my core at 10 PSI and realized that it was shot. Needless to say, I was not happy. I have the part being overnighted from IPD (will get here Tuesday) and my car is currently a mess. The entire interior (minus the back seat) is out. This is the only time I will remove the dash from this car, if I ever have any more problems it will become a parts car.

Now that I have removed everything, is there anything else i should do to try to make it another couple hundred thousand miles? I only have 115K on the car and it is my only car so I have a vested interest in keeping this thing going.

The only good news is that the blower replacement is really easy if you have the entire heating system out of the car. Just a bolt in part!

I almost went out and bought a 2005 CPO XC70 yesterday. My faith in the old 240 was shaken badly by this repair. I now it is not for the faint of heart, but reliability has not been on my side the last few thousand miles.

Cheers, John

Inspect and lube your windshield wiper arms and linkage. Also a great time to change out all of the lightbulbs in your dash. I hope your problems are solved by this effort. It is a lot of work, indeed.

other than changing the heater hoses inside the car, and MAYBE the valve-nothing. good luck, chuck.

I hope they (IPD) were kind to you and gave your purchase the 10% off price of next week. Their garage sale starts the 22th to the 24th for phone and online purchases.

Hope your order shipped on this Monday. Since you said overnight is Tuesday!

Since you did not mention that your leak smelled like antifreeze. I would make sure to use a fresh charge with the new core. If you used it. Then there may be a outside leak of fresh water. Inspect for trails from the windshield. Check the floor pan for rust and cracks. Missing or loose body plugs. Sometimes, cars lifts get set wrong and they can buckled the pan slightly. Enough to split the under seal.

Pop the inside rail plugs that are under the carpet. Clean out any leaves. The debris comes from the cowling vents and drains there.

A 115k is not good mileage even though the years are up there. Probably bad maintenance of non protection or not changing it at prescribed intervals.

Other than that. Put it back together nice and tidy. Give it a good vacuuming and fix the seat springs! Don't you love, their all out impressive effort of high technology, used there?

I don't! For a hundred of years people have been sitting around in cars and this is as good as it gets. Airline's beat them. If that is saying a whole lot more just because they float?

Happy Dad's day. Enjoy that lawn chair!

    Phil

Good call with IPD; I will call them first thing in the morning to make sure I get the discount.

Also, it does give me the chance to clean everything with a toothbrush; I will take this one in stride. Tons of leaves in nooks and crannies; I think it just sat outside too long.

I have been running water only in the radiator(i live in Texas!) for a while now and the car has always smelled musty so I am guessing it has been a persistently slow leak. And I am sure there is water coming in from below; I will flood test it before putting the interior back in.

      Thanks for the encouragement

Do not pass go, do not run straight water! Very bad idea, one that will corrode your head and lead to a head gasket leak and destroyed head! The heater core job and blower motor is only work. :) Don't be tempted by the XC70, those suckers are only money. My wife bought one, so I should know. I'm not sure it was a wise move. We love it, but it ain't a cheap transportation solution, at all! I plug away at my 240 issues and save save save! My old 240 is now an excellent A to B solution and I'm glad I bought it and fixed it up. Just keep "up-fixin' der Volvo"! (I got that from an old Porsche book called "Up-fixin der Porsche" and I think it's funny for some reason!) :) Good luck with getting that dash back together, it takes a while to do it right! I'm sure you won't have to go back in for a long while.

        Howdy,

I had thought I had a leak in the floor pans of my car because the interior would be wet after a rain but it always took forever to dry out.

Clean the tube that drains the inlet air cavity. You can find it up against the firewall by searching for it from the passenger's foot well. Dislodge it and run a wire coat hanger or similar through it and the tube it attaches to.

I have been running water only in the radiator(i live in Texas!) for a while now...

This is a practice I strongly advise against. The aluminum in the head will act as an anode during galvanic processes. Galvanization causes metal to be stripped from a sacrificial anode. In this case, the aluminum (being right behind magnesium and zinc as the most reactive metals in a galvanic process) is stripped from the head.

Antifreeze has corrosion inhibitors to raise the PH of the water to slow galvanization to a crawl. Without it, the head will self-destruct.

Pull your thermostat housing. Is it shelf where the thermostat sits pitted and eroded? If so, you can bet there is more going on elsewhere.

I'll admit to being guilty of the same... running straight water.

But I agree.. antifreeze should be used. For reasons you cite, but also... it's not just antifreeze, it is also anti-boil.

As for the original question.. I'll add my vote to checking the wiper linkage.. that's a real pain if it fails...

While you are in there, check the heater control valve and make sure it's not corroded or leaking. When I did mine, I changed all of the rubber hoses going in and out of the core.

yeah, if you could get your hands on a heater control valve it would be a good time to do it.
