Poll, aircondition compressor lifetime 900

Hi there,

What do you think is the expected lifetime of an aircondition compressor during normal operation?
It's not been damaged (that I know of) but I just don't get very good performance anymore. The ECC is on it's third condensor, at least, and for each replacement I think it's cooling a little less.

It's the original compressor since 93 and there is soon 480000 kms on the clock
(30 kmiles). Since it's a mechanical component it must eventually wear out at some point in time. I've googled but not found what could be expected.

Are there any simple tests I could do to tell a worn compressor from low level of R134A in the system? The compressor is not cycling on a 26 degree day in the sun (79 F)

/mila

Our four cars have 198k miles (19 years), 185k (14 yrs), 130k (17 yrs), and 120k (14yrs) all on the same compressors. The first and second cars have had condensers replaced due to corrosion around 150k miles. The second has had a new evaporator at 140k.

      Thanks Steve,

Have you noticed any degradation in performance or are they still performing well?
I've searched the FAQ but haven't find a way for a shade tree mechanics like myself to truly diagnose a worn compressor .

They are working well. The real test is the temperature at the outlets per the Volvo specs: you will need a green manual for this data. We converted all ours to R134 which has a small performance penalty.
