On a 90 740TI:
I've got rear wheel bearings that are making a whunk-whunk-whunk noise quite like my front bearings were before replacement.
I know that there was some extremely fine river silt (car drove around in it for 10-ish years) that infiltrated the front seals.

Are there grease points for the rear? (It looks to me like there may be) It's a solid rear axle. If I have to remove the bearings, I might as well replace them.

Be sure the problem noises are actually coming from the rear wheel bearings. Removing them and the outer seals from the axle shafts requires a press and the locking rings get destroyed in the process. In other words--rear axle bearing kits are in order. If the noise is coming from the center section the best solution would be an entire used rear assembly. A steel bar or real stethescope are useful for pinning down the source of the noise. Put the car on jack stands or a lift and run it in gear. -- Dave

Check the gear lube level in the rear end.You should be able to feel it with your finger. If not, get a small piece of wire and stick it down in there. No, there are no grease certs back there. good luck.
