Differential oil question 700 1987

Hi folks,

Seems I can only find one of the gear oil quarts in my workshop - a friend of mine must have taken it without telling me. I didn't realize this until I had already drained the gear oil out of my differential. I have one new quart in the differential now, and it appears to me that more could be added. I stuck a bit of wire in there to check the level, and it is way below the fill hole, with the car on a slight forward incline. Is it safe for me to drive the car with the diff this low on fluid, at least to town and back to get more oil?

Thanks!

Ari

I'm with Billy242... Grab your friend and let him/her do the running around.

Good rules: Make sure there is toilet paper before sitting down and make sure you have all the Parts you need before disassembling. : )

How far is it to town and back? I'd say if it is a ten mile round trip you'll be okay. Are you using synthetic lube?

You might be ok with that much, and you might not... If it were me, I'd leave the car parked and have your friend bring you another quart of gear oil and top it off like it's supposed top before driving the car.

I'm fortunate that I live very close to an auto parts store, and can take a bicycle or my motorcycle to chase parts when my car isn't driveable. Given my circumstance, this is why I'd be inclined to leave the car parked rather than risk damaging the ring and pinion.
