manifold heat shield 200 1982

This is a second attempt to post. The first one must be floating around in cyberspace...

What is the PN for the heat shield between the manifold and the spark plugs? The application is a B21FT, 1982 245GLT. I cannot find the PN on line but might be able to find the part if I have the PN.

TIA

I found a spare this afternoon. Needs minor repair to lower bolt hole--weld or braze a washer in place. $10 plus USPriority Mail--should be basic rate of $5 and something cents. I can send you a photo if you'd like--let me know directly--Dave

Why?

Texas emissions exempts cars after 25 years... You shouldn't need it. Maybe Houston is different... And I just threw a bunch of those things away!

Have you thought about doing it 7-9 style? 3 individual pieces to protect the spark plug wires? I know I have some of those...

Why?

For the same reason that Volvo put it there 27 years ago; to shield the plug wires and boots from the exhaust heat.

Cars older than 25 years are exempt from emissions testing in the counties that require it, but all cars are still subject to the annual safety inspection. Part of that inspection includes a visual inspection that all emissions related equipment that was installed as factory equipment is in place. Depends on the station you go to. I have had inspections that they looked at everything and inspections that they never lifted the hood.

That is the PN alright. Thanks, Art. I don't know that I will be buying one though. I will probably use what is left of mine as a pattern to see what I can do.

For about 20% of that price you could put fiberglass racing boots on the wires.

Might even get them monogrammed!

I use these plug wires from cravingboost.com

John makes these wires by hand and they're great - especially when you've got a turbo.

I have had some dealings of working on a Range Rover. Their post like Michigan made...MagnaCore wires. They have the same spiral wound core but the model Range Rover I worked on did not include the fiberglass. Don't know what else they offer but they do provide a good hot spark. They make it run smoother than the stock Rover wires did.

Your wires have a nice touch if that is where the heat gets them.

I could just over a thousand miles on parts house regular wires for a motor home mounted 454 Chevy.

I purchased some High Energy Jacob's plug wires from Camping World RV with a lifetime warranty. Because they came with Ceramic plug terminals @ $125.00. They lasted a couple thousand miles. I had to contact Mr. Gasket Co. to get warranty replacement because they bought out Jacobs. They would only warrant one set! They also suggested their fiberglass covers on top of the ceramic ends. I wasn't happy about the end of my lifetime warranty so I bought some from another maker. $58.00 for eight.

Then I doubled up: Heat shields!
I then took cardboard (cereal box) and shaped it to fit 1/2 to 3/4th's way around the wires. For a pattern to be transferred to some 22 gauge metal. Welded a rod to hold them together. I fasten my setup to the manifold bolts.

Between that and the fiberglass covers they have been working for over two years now. Don't have to have factory parts to do a job.

I 'm not aware if there are heat shields offered aftermarket for engines. Sometimes you have to build your own or shop around a lot I bet!

Phil
