Roof Rack Residue Removal 200 1983

I have begun to tackle some things other than mechanical on my '83 wagon. Recently I removed the roof rack and fitted holes with IPD grommets. There are impressions on the paint left behind by the slats.

What's worse, though, is that some of the asphalt-like padding beneath the slats was also left behind in places. The only way I found to remove it was with a heat gun set on low and a piece of wood in the shape of a chisel. That went pretty well after I got the hang of it, but even after getting that off, this thin tobacco colored adhesive-looking stuff was left underneath. I have tried mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, and some of my wife's fingernail polish remover to no avail.

This junk looks like crap on my roof and I really want to get it off without destroying the paint job. I have not yet tried lacquer thinner but probably will when I get some. Has anyone encountered this and removed it successfully? Thanks ahead for worthwhile tips.

Jim

You might want to try a product called "GOO GONE". A mild adhesive remover.

Its is a citrus cleaner and comes in a small bottle.

The next thing is a tar and bug remover. Both of these can be found in various stores including hardware and auto parts stores.

Past that. Polishing compound. Not rubbing compound.

If your car is a Volvo non metallic color. An old 60's, long time car polish called TR3. Made by Blue Coral now! Works good at cleaning up paint. Gets at the oxidation and cleans too! Applies a resin that the compound cannot, in one step.

There are lots of tricks. No way use lacquer thinner or acetone. Which a nail polish remover is with glycerin or lanolin. Those are hot products but still less than the any of the ketone members. Some of these can effect the liver through the skin!

I would suggest a good paint cleaner and a buffer. You will be surprised how with often cleaning and polishing the old paint can bring it back to life a bit. I use Meguiar's 1 and 3 Paint cleaner and cleaner wax a couple of times a year. That a a good wax and buffing has removed or reduced several issues with discolored paint on places like where the the old tape used to be under the windows. Never going to be perfect of course but had made a difference.

If you have a jet black car (my wife's non volvo ride is) get the Turtle Wax Black Box. That car looked like it rolled off the show room floor after a cleaning and wax following the directions. Turtle wax also make a way for Dark Green and Red cars, that is not as good as the black box. You had better wear gloves with any of the colored wax unless you plan to wear that tint of color for a bit.

Just about anything else is going to damage the paint more that it is already.

    Regards,

    Paul

      Thanks Paul,

This stuff is on top of the paint and is not a discoloration of the paint itself, but I guess there is possibility that I will not be able to remove it without damaging the surrounding paint. If so, I suppose I may have to just live with it and go with the methods you've described. I have already done that on my hood with very good results.

      regards,
      Jim
