Power Driver Seat to manual 900

This hasn't worked in months; even after soldering, cleaning connections etc. many times. Looks like the switch box is retired now.

Is there anyway possible to move this seat manually? It needs to be moved up about 1". My wife can't hardly reach the pedals and they are a good ways for me too. If I could just move the the bottom one time about an inch I would be good.

I checked all the connections and box as described in the FAQS section. I think the box is shot.

Thanks!

    Dear NC40,

May this find you well. Can you access the four bolts (two front, two back) that secure the seat to the floor pan? If so, you can remove the seat from the car, replace the computer, and so restore normal movement.

Before trying to remove the seat, note the following:
DEATH DANGER WARNING: Before trying to remove the seat, remove the negative battery cable clamp from the battery terminal, and put the clamp in a plastic bag, to isolate it. This cuts power supply to the SRS (Airbag) System. The airbag sensor is under the driver's seat, affixed to the floor pan. If this sensor is banged - if you drop the seat on it, or drop a tool on it - the airbag could deploy. This can be lethal, at close quarters. It will also be costly: a new sensor is about $1,200. A new airbag is about the same.

A seat computer should not cost much at a salvage yard. Be sure to have them mark it, so you can exchange it, should it not work.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

by seat computer, do you mean the switch panel (the actual switches that move the seat) or is there another computer under the seat?

Thanks for the heads up on the SRS. I took your guidance before when I cleaned all the wiring and did some soldering on the switches. Luckily you told me that the first time and from now on I always unhook the negative (<20 minutes prior to work) and wrap it in plastic.

Hopefully I can find one at a salvage yard.

      Thanks

        Dear NC40,

May this find you well. On the driver's seat, there is a separate computer. It is affixed to the steel wires, that support the upholstery. Because there's little clearance between the computer and the floor pan, the computer is best accessed by removing the seat. The computer is a black plastic box, with four connectors. The computer case can be opened, by pressing the tabs on the side. There are four connectors: two large (one gray, one black) and two small (one gray, one green).

When you open the case, you will see a master relay and eight smaller "slave" relays. These relays control the flow of power to the seat motors.

If none of the seat functions are working, I'd guess the master relay has failed.

It should not be hard to find one of these at a salvage yard: any 940 or 960, from 1992 through 1994 will definitely work. I think the same computer was used in later 960s and 850s, as well. The salvage yard should have a Hollander interchange manual or software and be able to give you a list of potential donor cars.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Jay E.

Thanks! That was great information and hopefully I can find a donor car for the motor/relay. I'll call around and see if anyone has one.

          Thanks again!

          Eric

            Dear Eric,

May this find You well. You should seek a "seat computer" for a Volvo 940, driver's seat. So far as I know, the relays inside the seat computer box are not available as repair parts.

If you need a replacement "seat control switch", you should be able to get it from the same donor car. The driver's seat control switch has a single cable, with a green connector.

The seat motors are likely fine, so I'd not buy those, until a known good seat computer fails to enable you to control the seat.

            Yours faithfsully,

            Spook
