broke sway bar link 900 1993

Hearing some squeaks/creaks/clunks in the front end. Could be anything, but sway bar link bushings were my first target, since I have the upper bushings, and the old ones look quite cracked. I thought the shaft might be hitting the sway bar, so I went to twist off the nut. It broke right off, and now with the upper bushing removed, I see only about 1/2" of shaft protruding above the sway bar; no thread left.

First question: How bad/dangerous is it to drive with no upper nut in place? I suspect it would affect my cornering, but is it just a minor problem, or a serious/safety issue. Will the sway bar pop off the top of the link on a turn, and get into a more problematic condition?

I was thinking that while I source a replacement link, I might be able to put some kind of bolt clamp on the protruding bit (with no upper bushing in place), to at least hold the sway bar on the link. Anyone have a suggestion of where I would find such a clamp? Kind of like a heavy duty "thumb screw" (I'm sounding a bit morbid here!).

Thanks,

its not a driving or even a safety issue.
you might want to cut off the stub so the clunk goes away.
the easiest and cheapest way to fix it is to take one off either side of any 240 or 940 in a junkyard. they are the same part and yards will charge almost nothing for it.

    Dear David,

May this find you well. To clamp the top stub of the sway bar link, you could use a clamp, of the sort electricians use to connect a ground wire to the ground rod. A ground rod is a bronze rod, driven into the ground, to which is clamped a ground wire, that comes from the electrical service panel. This grounding is required by the National Electrical Code, so the rods and clamps are readily available.

At a Home Depot, Lowe's, or an electrical supply house, the ground rod clamps should be available in a size, that will fit on the stub. I'd think this would hold, until you can get replacement sway bar links.

When you install the links, put anti-seize compound on the threads.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
