coils noisy 900

I have isolated the creaking going on with my front end on my 162K 960. Already replaced everything up there. The coil springs themselves are creaking when I push down on front end and when I place a finger on coils I can feel the vibration as I compress front end.

I have sprayed lithium grease on the area where the bottom of coil seats on metal strut flange but temporary solution. I am going to take the struts off the car and inspect the coils. Anything to look for? Could coils be cracked? Any thoughts on this?

You could put some grease on the spring mounts (upper and lower) so they don't rub.

so if i remember the upper part of spring sits in that rubber donut? and bottom of spring just sits on metal shelf correct?

This is driving me nuts, it's like I'm driving an old wooden wheel wagon. Is there any way my new control arms could be squeaking?

You are correct about the orientation. The new LCA bushings should not be squeaking. I assume you installed them, left the bolts just a touch loose, then lowered the vehicle completely to put the weight on the suspension then torqued the LCA bolts with the vehicle on the ground.

you know what? I don't think I did the control arms this way. I believe I torqued them while it was still in air. What did I do? Did I harm them in any way. I followed Alldata. IIRC alldata didn't specify if susp should be loaded or unloaded when torque applied. I'll have to review my notes but I really appreciate that thought, this may be it. I'll report back.

Did you use poly cone bushings? They tend to squeak. Some of IPD's sway bar bushing grease would probably help.

I put in new control arms with bushings already installed and the units were from FCP ($85.00). Tonight I loosened control arm bolts while vehicle was raised and then set vehicle down to load suspension and then torqued bolts to 74.

I think when I originally installed these I torqued while vehicle was still suspended, so I thought I would redo. Drove tonight and still heard squeaking (maybe not as bad now). However another variable is that my springs are extremely weak and I can compress front end by hand so it hits bump stops. So I may have shot coil springs. I don't know.

Is that possible that the springs get so weak u can compress by hand?

You'd have to be a gorilla to compress those springs by hand.

what is the diameter of the spring ( use a metric box wrench to est.) maybe u don't have the proper srings in there.

I'd still find it pretty hard to believe u compress them by hand.

the strut insert has been replaced? is the strut tower rusted through and broken?

to clarify I press down on front of car at fender on each side and can compress the suspension enough that it hits bump stops. Strut towers are pristine, strut inserts new in last 5K.

                  To illustrate...
Did this yesterday, as i'm idling up to a stop sign I can press the brakes hard and stop on dime and get the front end to bottom just by doing this. Is it abnormal for coils to get this weak at 162K? What are my options for replacing these? Is it dealer only? Any advice on this?

No it's not normal ......I'm not a harcore volvo guy but having just done front end work and pricing out parts on numerous occasions you can get new spring coils on numerous sites that advertise here.

I'm also a 740 guy so not sure what the 940 looks like.

You'd approach it like u would a strut insert change.

Did u measure the diameter of the coil with a wrench to see if previous owner swapped out originals and put in what ever they could get their hands on?

Call parts guy at a dealer to see what the diameter is on the stock springs.

Strut inserts could also be faulty and gone south early.
