Getting this off without blowing the car up 120-130

Hi guys - here is one for you. Suggestions on how to remove the gas cap, which is very much locked in place, without setting off a tank full of spoiled gasoline?

I was thinking drill it off after applying WD40 liberally to cut down on any chance of a spark. Yes/no?

    WD-40 will help lube immediately for picking attempts (but the key is a 5 or six pin, doublesided WASO blank and if any nonlocksmith owner can successfully pick it, they're a better man than I, Gungha Din!)...but WD-40 wont do anything to prevent sparks (and sucks IMHO as a longterm lube)...and if tank is truly full of stale fuel, then it has less octane than extra virgin olive oil...it'll burn sure, but need a lot more than you fumbling around with and at the fuelcap to ignite it!!!

    My advice: Feed fuelpump by way rubber line running to a reserve can of fresh fuel in passenger footwell (or in front of radiator if your worried about it in passenger compartment, see below), drive vehicle to an experience locksmith and ask them to make a "key by impression"...and have them make a copy once good function is verified...lube lock with Tri-Flow!

    Drain tank of stale fuel by loosening brass plug.

    ...and PLEASE stop with the gasoline exploding when you look at it crosseyed bit...Gasoline is great stuff, and an unsurpassed way of relatively safety storing and carrying around a huge amount of BTUs, BUT, it ONLY explodes if combined with air in a relatively precise ratio, then compressed and ignited...otherwise it just burns...sure, care is called for when working around it but just as much care as when using paint thinner to clean your brushes or filling your lawnmower, or spraying carb cleaner while servicing you SUs (No Smoking, please, around atomized hydrocarbons!), but nobody make a big deal of that...

    If you're in a hurry, you can just pry the cap off the filler tube. You'll bend the tabs that hold the cap in place, but once it's out, you can straighten them again.

    Not the gentlest approach, but it works.

    Since you may want to have a key made for the lock what I'd do is open the trunk, loosen the hose clamp, remove the tube with the cap attached, bring to locksmith, go home with working locking cap. Others have suggested how to get gas into the tank via the sender. -- Dave

      The tube with the cap is welded to the tank. Difficult to remove; and even if you do cut it off, the end that connects to the tank is too wide to exit the hole in the body.

    Illegal slidehammer attachment?

    Seriously though, you can drain the tank and fill it with water. Or just have a full emersion flow of water over the work area as drilling.

    You could purge the O2 from the tank with a constant stream of nitrogen while you do your thing.

    Neither of these methods is very practical.

    Can a portion of the filler neck be removed with the gas cap still attached?

      Good idea, but...... Bit of a Catch-22 there, can't get her to a locksmith until I get her running. Can't get her running until I get the cap off. I was hoping to avoid towing here. Getting a locksmith out to where she is stored currently will be big $$$.

        That is a REALLY simple lock. You should be able to pick it with the most rudimentary tools!
        Once you get it unlocked you can use it as a regular gas cap or take it to a locksmith to get a key made for it.
        Do you know the principles of lock picking?

            The principle is that you hold enough torque on the lock to allow pushing the individual
            tumblers/disks to their proper position but not to allow them to spring back.
            When you get all of them right, the lock cylinder will turn.
            So you need one tool to apply a twisting force and another to push the tumblers.
            From there on, it's all practice.
            A small screwdriver might suffice for the first one.
            I've made picks out of LARGE paperclip wire, straightened-out box staples or whatever
            I could find.

              You know, if all you need to do is get fresh gas into the tank so you can drive the car to a locksmith, you could remove the gas gauge sender unit on top of the tank; 5 phillips head screws, and just pour gas into the open hole and close it back up again.

                In addition to that, the 122s that I've worked on had a brass plug in the bottom of the tank that looked like they were installed especially for draining the tank.

                  i used a Snapon tool box key which is double sided. wiggled it in the lock and turned. maybe i was lucky but i was successfull.

                    Hi guys - so I got out to the car, popped the trunk and confirmed that the filler neck (which is welded to the tank) extends all the way out of the trunk to where the cap screws on.

                    I haven't tried bending the lid yet, and it is pretty solidly made, but I'll have to give that a try.
