Ok i have no break lights when my head lights are on, and one if lights are off.

the one light that works is the very bottom right red on passenger side.

now if i turn on head or running light i get the correct running lights, and i also get the brake light, on the passenger side bottom right red just comes on stays on......

my third break light is not working at all.

i took each bulb out cleaned with a brass brush all contacts, and the little white "poorly made" connector, saw a few bits of green, nothing real bad. the plastic copper ribbon that makes contact with the bulb holder is in good shape, i do not see any cracks or tears? i looked at fuses.

i looked at the brake peddle and i did not see the switch for the brake lights, where is it? is it higher up the peddle assembly?


My 740 is still down this is my only car at the moment!

Did not fully understand the exact nature of what is and is not working here, but I may be able to help you trouble shoot.

First, the switch for the brake lights is NOT your problem if any brake lights turn on

Second, the third brake light...wagon or sedan?

It sounds like, but I am not sure, that you are confusing running lights (taillights) with the brake lights...or fog lights if your car is so equiped. Put BRAND NEW identical bulbs (brand, wattage...everything) in the brake lights. Does the problem change or remain the same?

If it remains the same, use jumpers to wire the brake light directly from the harness to the contacts on the bulb holder (unplugging the harness is the easiest) for the brake light...don't forget the ground. If the bulb lights when you apply the brakes, the issue is the printed circuit board flexy thing...istall perm point-to-point wiring. This is assuming that you have already made sure the groud wire is intact and making good contact with the chasis.

If none of this helps, I would bet it is a failed bulb-out relay if you car is so equiped (which I am 99% sure it is). Other will chime in if I missed something.

soo turns out one was a poor connection and the bulb? one is a broken tail light assembly where the bulb holder twist in i guess i cant fix that, without a new lens and all? when you say install permanent point to point, is there a kit or part, or should i just build it myself?

and funny you say fog lights....so that switch on my dash labeled "fog lights" is not for a missing front set? but a rear light? o my i just learned something! now i understand the five bulbs in the rear! LOL WOW

Ther is not kit for point to point wiring but it is common to do it yourself.

For the buld holder that turn round and round...after you make sure it still can be wired up, use som high temp metalized epoxy to glue the bugger in place.

Yep, the switch on the dash for fog light is mainly aimed at one (or two) VERY bright auxilary taillights that help people in very foggy countries (say, Swededn) from rear-ending you.
