Failed Emissions 200 1985

The is the first time my 1985 wagon failed an emissions test in the Land of Entrapment (NM).

The hydrocarbon (HC) was way over-limit 220, reading 403. The CO was slightly over.

Ok- where do I start and what do I replace?

Thanks

Hope I'm not too late to help you out here. I'm quite familiar with emissions testings as Rhode Island is quite strict with their rules and regs...><

Do you know when was the last time you replaced your Catalytic Converter? They're imperative in regards to how much harmful substances your brick releases in the air.

O2 sensors would cause your car to run rich and it's fairly noticeable. Does your car have rich smelling exhaust? If so that could very well be your answer.

Hope this helps!

Cat conv has never been replaced under my watch. I was thinking about throwing in another O2 sensor and replacing flame trap. What does "rich" exhaust smell like (I think I may have it)?

Thanks

From what you have stated, I suggest checking all these things: Is distributor cap and rotor clean or new? Clean air filter, clean flame trap/pcv system,
MAF/AMM dirty?, Catlytic converter or 02 sensor, something unplugged, clogged,
wiring grounding to metal. Seems to be running too rich, which would point to O2 sensor, engine ECU, Coolant temp sensor, air filter, or MAF sensor.

Hope this helps.

Land of Entrapment? Is that because once you get here you can't leave.
Right now during Balloon Fiesta is a great time of the year.

I am in Abq. on Coors Blvd.

I would do the basic tune up, don't forget the air filter.
Make sure your air box in front of the air filter is
taking air from outside and not hot air from the engine.
Take her out on the highway at 60-70 mph for about the
distance of town (10 miles) on the way to have her tested again.

This is how I got mine to pass a few years ago, but now she
passes without the drama.

You can have her re-tested for free at the Bernalillo County Air Station on
Broadway Blvd. a few blocks North of Mountain Road. I had them retest
mine about four times before she passed. Usually they only do it once,
be nice and they will be nice hopefully.

Land of Entrapment- no just cause they make you test 85 an older vehicles every year instead of every 2 years.

Yea- I have to agree- Balloon Fiesta is nice. I am am in the NE Heights

Thanks to all who responded here.
