M46 Reverse going forward 200 1982

Hi, I'm having an issue with my Transmission, basically when I shift the car into reverse it seems to be in 1st gear instead. I haven't had the chance to check under the car, but I imagine its probably some part of the shift linkage gone wonky. But I thought I'd ask for any thing else I should check (the detent plate adjustment maybe, but I couldn't imagine that moving enough in a few minutes of driving to prevent going into reverse all of a sudden).
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

There are a couple of small rubber bushings in the linkage setup under the car alongside the transmission that have been known to wear to the point of causing real sloppy shifter response. The shifter switch itself has also been known to become loose and need readjustment. Search the 740 FAQ or the 240 section on the Brickboard for detailed instructions on each repair.
