Harmonic Balancer....should I replace it? 900 1993

I'm in the process of changing my timing belt on my 940T (120K mi.) and discovered that my crankshaft pulley was off TDC by a couple of degrees, but with all the timing marks on the pulley itself still lining up.

A parts dealer advised me that the rubber on the pulley was probably failing and I ordered an aftermarket replacement. The replacement is off by a couple of degrees as well, so the problem doesn't appear to have been the original pulley.

Is this something I should be concerned about or should I just put it back together the way it was before?

The aftermarket pulley was made in India for a company called MTC, and I'm a little concerned about the quality. Anybody had experience with MTC parts? I'm tempted to send it back, but I don't want to do this job again in 6 months because I reinstalled a failing pulley.

Thanks.

The Volvo one can be had from Tasca Volvo for $143 plus $10 shipping. It is of superb quality. Your's is most likely original - 16 years it has lasted.

I generally steer clear of MTC (Made To Crap) and SCANTECH for anything that I need to be durable.

That is a big price difference, though. If you stuck with the aftermarket, I would paint a white line with white-out across the front so you can easily tell if it is separating.

it is not a problem. if by off you mean the cut lines in the top of the balancer do NOT line with the tdc marks when the other pulleys are lined up......do not worry. the only two sprockets that really matter are the cam sprocket and the crank sprocket. the interference matters somewhat so it is good idea to do it right and have that set up so the rotor points at number 1. but the car will still run fine if this one is not dead on.

as long as the key in the crank sprocket is set in the slot in the balancer and the crank sprocket is at tdc with the cam no worries about the balancer

you likely do not need the replacement
