Throbbing/Surging idle..Code 233 Regina.... Very long really sorry.. 700 1992

For several months now I have put up with a throbbing idle ( 100-200 rpm ) 3 or 4 times a second. Only with a cold engine or if I shut it down and start it back up warm or operating temperature. Cold it would stop as soon as it was in drive. Warm or operating temperature it would throb in drive also and then after a couple minutes suddenly stop. When I first bought the car it would throb three times immediately after starting for just about a second, then be fine the rest of the day. I have replaced the intake manifold gasket ( cracked in many places) Cleaned the idle control (filthy) and throttle body(filthy) using a new gasket. Checked the tps adjustment and also that the computer is seeing the switch input (ok) . No vacuum leaks. Good clean grounds on fenders and intake. Idles fine if you disconnect the hose from the manifold to idle control and use a thumb to regulate idle speed.

I always suspected the idle air control after all this, never a code...Until this morning. Left work fine in drive. Then a block away it starts surging wildly at idle in drive about 3 times a second and severely jerking the car.
Checked for codes and got a 233 ( idle control valve closed ) Regina system.
Would it be safe to say the idle control is bad especially after this? I would have replaced it earlier if I could find a used one cheap (10-20) But auction place ones are 40 to 50 bucks and new ones $315 on Eeuroparts. I would rather buy new than overpay for a used. Where can I get a reasonably priced iac new or used? By the way, I restarted it a half hour after this episode and it seems to be back to its "normal" throbbing. Many thanks in advance for any help

Throbbing/Surging idle..Code 233 Regina.... Very long really sorry.. 700 1992

I just bought a new OEM unit for my '90 Regina from fcp. They matched Tasca volvos price of....$265. Ouch, but hey the part lasted 22 yrs, so bite the bullet and be glad you avoided the dealer or a car payment on some new POS that is still depreciating.

Regina idle air valve 700 1992

Hey Mark,

I've done the same with my car in regards to the IAC valve, but the most reasonable place I have found to get a new one is German Auto Parts. They have a genuine VDO valve for $171.00.

Still not cheap, but better than 315. I plan to get a new one myself when finances permit.

Hope this finds you well,

Jon 'Uncle Olaf'

Throbbing/Surging idle..Code 233 Regina.... Very long... UPDATE 700 1992

After some calling around I went to a wrecking yard and right at the entrance was a 940 Regina wagon....I managed to get the idle control valve for $10. Guy wanted $25 then agreed to let me pull it myself for $10. Cleaned it up and popped it in and the preliminary findings are that it worked. Shocked to see what I needed locally as these cars are getting tough to find here. (rust belt)
I will know for sure when I go to work again if it is really cured or the car is toying with me..

Throbbing/Surging idle..Code 233 Regina.... Very long really sorry.. - long reply too. 700 1992

I'm in the middle of trying to diagnose a few problems, one of which is a fluctuating idle on my 93 940 Regina car. I plan on recleaning the IAC as it was quite dirty and may not have got it clean the 1st time.

Here's my latest angle of pursuit - I have checked for leaks in the intake over and over, but may have overlooked one - I changed the hose that goes from the intake to the fuel pressure regulator and noticed the old one had some very fine cracks on the bend I hadn't noticed before. Anyway, it appears that has had a small but noticeable effect - at idle this vacuum is intended to lower the fuel pressure in the rail to compensate for the lesser amount of fuel required at idle. But here's the important finding in my case - pulling the hose off while the motor is running has little effect on idle speed and it should. So I've taken the step of ordering a new FPR in the hopes it will solve all of my remaining issues.

On the weekend my non photographic visual memory tripped me up - found a 93 940 turbo at an auto recycler and pulled a very good looking FPR and IAC from what looked like a Regina car to me (lots of other parts missing). Anyway, they don't fit my 93 non-turbo (at least I now have spares for my non Regina 93 240, I think.

Hope I haven't muddied the waters

Ron
