cam bearings 444-544

I just bought a used b20 with about 5k miles on it since rebuild (I haven't peaked inside it yet but I do believe it has low miles on it) and wanted to replace the cam. Question: Do I need to replace the cam bearings?

thanks, Stu

Replacing them involves pretty much a complete tear down. On the plus side, they almost never wear out ahead of the mains and rods anyhow, so you aren't likely to ever really need to replace them without needing a complete rebuild anyhow.

Take a good look at the bearings--if the surfaces are smooth chances are you don't have to do a thing with them. If they look gouged or otherwise suspect you may want a machinist (they are each a different size and best left to a pro to install) to see them. If your motor has good oil pressure (use a mechanical or electric gauge) and/or the oil light goes out right after cold or hot start up there is not likely to be a problem. -- Dave
