Fuel pump relay question 200

I posted a couple of days ago about a no start issue on my son's 88 240. We think we have it narrowed down to the fuel pump relay. When it's jumpered the fuel pump runs and it trys to start but will not run (without jumpering it does nothing). Is this normal that it would not continue to run when it's jumpered? We thought maybe it was flooding too much fuel since the pump is running continuously. Just wanted to make sure that's normal before purchasing the new relay.

thanks
Mike

The pumps running continuous will not flood the engine. There is a return line to the tank. The fuel will just cycle back to the tank.
you may have a relay issue but you got something else going on as well.

You can resolder these relays very easily. Usually they fail from a solder connection breaking. It's very basic inside that white cover, nothing really scary. Is the gas tank below 1/2 when the 'no start' happened? There is a rubber hose in the tank at about the halfway point, they can crack and suck air when the tank reaches 1/2. If you happen to have about 1/2 tank, I 'd throw in another gallon and see if the car starts.

Maybe jumpering the pumps is helping draw a little more gas when trying to start it.

Jumping bypasses the relay, if the pumps run the relay is bad. But it sounds like you have other issues.

remove the cover of the relay, re-install and observe when you start the car. You ca n manually push the relays over to start the car as a test.
