Car stalls out maybe fuel relay? 240 200 1990

So my dad gave me a 1990 240 about 2 months ago. He had just replaced the fuel pump. He said every once in a while it would stall out, then start back up. So I have been driving it and all of the sudden whether I am apply the gas or not it will stall out. A couple of times I was driving and would press the gas, nothing would happen then all of the sudden it would "go" again. It is getting worse. Sometimes when it stalls I just tap on the fuel pump relay under the hood and it goes for a while, but now that doesn't always work. Today I replaced almost every fuse in the car, some seemed to have some corrosion but nothing to bad. Has anyone else had this problem? Or have any advice? Thanks

Car stalls out maybe fuel relay? 240 200 1990

Hi there,

It sounds to me like one of three very common weak spots on the 90 240.

(1) Wiring and fuseholder for 25A blade fuse under hood.

(2) Fuel pump relay has cracked solder.

(3) Crank sensor has cracked outer sheathing in its cable.

I'm just echoing the good advice you already have heard, of course.

Hello,
The fuel pump relay is not under the hood.
The fuel pump relay is on the passenger side, under
the carpet where your passengers toes would be.
It is right next to the two computers/brains.

I also vote that it is the crank position sensor.
I just replaced mine last week due to simular problems,
but my car only stalled on days that were above 92 degrees.

I was able to easily replace mine, I could see it on
top of the transmission if I looked from the driver side
of the engine back towards the tranny. The wire comes up
and attaches onto the firewall onto another plug.
I was able to remove mine using a socket wrench with a
10-12" extension, going down right between the engine and
the firewall. It was easier than I thought it would be.
Be careful not to break any part of it, because if any
plastic falls into the tranny then you will learn how to
remove and replace a tranny and that is a little harder to do.

That description seems very much like the Crank Position Sensor losing signal.
Its wiring gets old and frayed. I know of several posts to forums that report this very thing. My 1990 240 DL had it. It is located on top of the transmission bell housing between the rear engine compartment and transmission.
You'll be able to see it from the passenger side under the hood at the rear/top of engine, just below/behind valve cover. One bolt holds in on. Its wiring is routed up to a clip on the firewall center of engine compartment.

Easy to replace. New ones cost about $30 - $40.
