My 86 240 wagon with m46 200

This pic shows the rpm of my 86 240 wagon with m46, I like to know if I am at the same speed, with an automatic box, does the rpm change or stay the same?

At 75+ mph, you should be paying attention to the road, not taking pictures of your dashboard.

Mine 86 245 do the same as yours. At 3000RPM, the speed will be between 90-100MPH

"Mine 86 245 do the same as yours. At 3000RPM, the speed will be between 90-100MPH"

According to:
http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/1986/1986_240/86240_04.htm#pg88

Overdrive gives 26.9 mph for every 1,000 rpm. 3,000 x 26.9 / 1000=80.7 mph.

What size are your tires? 200

That is strange. I also have an '86 240, M46 4spd+OD. I get 2500 rpm at 65 mph running stock tires (185/15). At 75 mph my tach reads a "hair" under 3000 rpm.

I think that your speedo is off. I am not aware of different final drive ratios in US 240 wagons. Pretty much all of the M46/M47 cars had a 3.31 rear end from about '81 until end of production ('93). Automatics usually have a 3.91 rear end, however the overdrive in the autobox has a higher ratio to compensate for this. In theory, the cruising rpm's should be the same (manual vs. automatic).

Interesting. If I were at that speed in my '85 w/ m46, I would be at 3000rpm. I wonder if one of our speedos is off.

Interesting, indeed. Are the final drive ratios the same for these 2 model years?
btw, I got that reading on a level road, with ac off.

At that speed with an auto you would be running about 3K RPMs. So with an auto you lose a lot of power cruising vrs. the manual.

At that RPM I would be cruising at 62-65 mph in my 244 89' with automatic transmission (AW71).

Thanks all. I stick with manual to save gas and enjoy quieter trips.
