960 cooling fan always running 900 1996

My 960 (1996)colling fan always runs when the engine is first tuned on and never stops (engine temp always runs cold), but does not run when the engine is off. I'm wondering if a sensor is bad or a possible short.

Any thoughts?

Todd

The thermostat should be changed. The engine should reach operating temp whether fan is on or not.Use a good quality torx socket and PBlaster on the screws.

The temp sensor is on the lower thermostat housing. The fan relay is in front of the battery.

I'll replace the thermostate and see check it out. By the way, will a battery with low voltage (dying battery) create havoc on the electrical system?

The battery in my 98 S90 began its death spiral when it would crank the engine more slowly than usual, and there was only the occasional cough from the cylinders but no start. Getting a boost from a good battery gave somewhat faster cranking and an instant start. I installed a new battery and performance was back to normal.

So - yes, a low voltage battery will give you problems.

As for your cooling fan, check for a sticking fan relay. After startup, when the engine is cold, with A/C switched off the fan should not be running. Give the relay housing a sharp tap or two and if that shuts the fan off - there you are.
