Using a M410 from a 164 on a B18 from a 145 140-160

Everyone,

I may have a line on a M410 that I would like use to swap out my M40. My engine is B18 from a 1968 145 and my first question is: are there any problems with the bellhousing from the M410 not fitting the back of my B18? Could I swap the bellhousing off my M40 to solve this?

Secondly, I am going to be putting this engine/trans into a 1972 145 body. I know these cars have a bigger tunnel and some came with the M41 overdrive tranny, but does anyone know of any fitment issues using a M410 in this body?

Thanks again for all your help!
Brian

Well, sane might be a wee bit harsh. In my case, I purchased an R Sport adapter bellhousing that allowed the 164 style M410 to bolt up to tne B20. The rest of the issue, i.e. input shaft is resolved as Pete mentioned earlier with a Ford disc. The R Sport bellhousing allows the usage of the M40/41 clutch fork.
I'd buy the M410 simply because they are getting rare and in big demand by some vintage racers. Sit on it for a year and it might pay for the M41. I sold my M410 eventually as I like the simplicity of my M40, the reduced weight and the availability.

I have a '72 145 with an M410 in it. Granted, it's behind a B20, so I can't comment on it's compatibility with a B18. I can say that it fit like a glove in the '72 body, though I had to have the length on the front driveshaft changed. I got lucky and found one with the 1800 bellhousing like others are mentioning.

I made no changes to the input shaft. I used a clutch kit for an M41, including the throwout bearing. And I'm using a stock B20 flywheel.

If you can find the bellhgousing from the 1800E you can use an off the shelf Ford 8.5" clutch disc with the 1.125" input shaft splines. The t/o bearing needs to be the 164 type, and those are very hard to find.
It is possible to remove the input shaft from an 1800 M410, but if you have one of those, you may as well use the whole transmission.

FYI the M410 164 O/D unit is interchangable with the M46 O/D unit, but IIRC the M41 is a smaler shaft. At 0.69:1 would make for some low cruising rpm's, and very difficult for a B18/20 to push unless built as a torque monster.

Youre better off finding an M41

The only bellhousing that will work is one from one of the 1970 1800Es with an M410.
I believe the B30 input shaft is quite different than the B20 one.

Uh oh, that input shaft difference sounds like a serious problem. Would it be possible to just steal the overdrive and stick it on the back of my M40? The deal on this M410 was really good but maybe I will just need to leave it for a 164 owner :)

There's basically no sane way to install a 164 type M410 behind a B18 or B20. The bell housing will not interchange and the input shaft is wrong. The OD will not adapt to a M41, much less a M40 (you can't just bolt up a correct OD to a trans that doesn't have one). If the idea is to have overdrive, go look for an M41.

Alright, I gotcha...everything is a different size :) I guess I was just hoping to get an overdrive for cheap. I'll have to resume the search for an M41. Thanks for all the info!
