Mechanics Along the Way. 120-130

Hi all. I sold a '66 122 a month ago and the new owner is going to fly from Spokane WA to here in Oakland, CA and drive it back up. I've only ever taken the car on a day trip, about 300 miles or so. The car was fine, but the new owner really has no mechanical know-how, and is more of a 'go to a mechanic' sort of guy. I really want him to have a successful fun journey and just hoping I could maybe get the names of a couple mechanics along the way. Maybe northern California, Medford, Portland, and I imagine that would be good. Or any other places along the way. Just want this guy to have a good experience and feel taken care of.

The folks at ipd in Portland certainly know Volvos. There are a couple of good shops in the Portland area, I'm sure. You might look in the back of Rolling magazine and see if someone jumps out at you. Otherwise, if the car is in sound mechanical condition, I would just pack it full of tools and support equipment and hit the road. If I didn't have any mechanical skills, and was afraid of the drive, I'd have it delivered for me. But where is the adventure in that?

Best bet to drive north 120-130

Be careful, Rolling magazine also advertises Torchlight motors in NJ.

What any seller should do is a minor tune up. Make sure the points and timing are correct, fluids good and not leaking, an extra quart of oil with the spare tire, and ask the new owner if he has AAA. Make sure he has your phone number and a cell phone.

Stick a 99 cent cup holder in the window chanel on the passenger side, easily reached from the driver's seat. That also keeps the window from rattling :)

    Nowhere near me.
I wonder why a person with NO mechanical knowledge wants a 122......
I hope he is willing to develop some.
Most of the mechanics around here won't touch anything older than they are!

Hehe. I wondered the same thing, but the guy was terribly excited. He's got a mechanic friend apparently. I may end up taking the trip myself for fun. Let him take the leg from Portland to Spokane.

H-m-m-m! That would mean that you would work on my 1935 Ford truck??? ;>) Ha! At least I will work on stuff that I probably shouldn't and is almost as old as I am....

      Couldn't resist.

Sorry to say but IPD doesn't really care too much about the older cars this day in age.... There isn't much money to be made off them.

Alpine Imports in Springfield (Eugene part of the world)is a Volvo only shop who's owner is an 1800 driver.

In Portland there are several full time repair shops but there are also a couple of really good shade tree mechanics (I will let them chime in if they so wish).

I'm outside of Portland if he gets stuck or needs a part, I guess he can holler at me and I can see what I can do to help.

I love the responses on this board. Thanks guys.

I'll definitely have to nab a cup-holder... good tip.

After talking to the guy, I'm not sure he's up to the drive... I on the other hand had planned to drive it north for fun before I had to replace the transmission on the car... soooo

We've devised a reimbursement plan for me and I guess I'll be doing the drive. He'll take it to Spokane from Portland. Alpine Imports, I'll take note of that... and I'll probably bring your number along w/ my Chris... thanks a ton... where outside of Portland are you?
